This is no longer science fiction – at CES we checked out technology that could completely change the look of our cars and laptops. Rollable OLED displays from TCL CSOT and an innovative project from Lenovo prove that a screen doesn't have to be a rigid pane of glass!
TCL OLED Screen That Appears and Disappears
The biggest impression was made on us by the prototype from TCL CSOT. It’s a retractable OLED panel that has been hidden in the car's dashboard. The screen smoothly extends just like a sheet of paper only when needed. This solution allows for maintaining a minimalist interior of the car without sacrificing a vast workspace.
Lenovo: A Laptop that "Grows" Before Your Eyes
We have seen similar technology in Lenovo's release. The manufacturer showcased a laptop whose screen mechanically extends upward, increasing the working area in just a few seconds. This is an ideal solution for people working with long spreadsheets or code, who want a compact device when the work is done.
Although the concept of rollable screens is not new (we remember the LG Rollable R9 television from 2019), what we saw this year is a completely different level. The key is miniaturization – the new matrices roll up into a very tight tube, requiring neither large housings nor powerful actuators. Imagine projection screens replaced by a paper-thin OLED with perfect contrast. Will our smartphones and laptops look like this in a few years? Everything suggests that we are indeed heading in this direction.
