According to the latest leaks, Apple still wants to develop its idea for physical camera control. The upcoming iPhone Fold is expected to feature a Camera Control button, even though the device is supposed to be exceptionally thin. This is quite surprising, as fitting such a component into a foldable phone requires significant space optimization. However, Apple apparently believes it’s worth it.
The idea sounds good in theory
The premise is simple. Foldable phones are large, so you often need to use both hands. Camera Control aims to bypass this and allow you to take photos with one hand, controlling the zoom and settings without touching the screen. It sounds reasonable, especially for people taking pictures on the go.
The problem is that even in current models like the iPhone 16 Pro, this button does not always work perfectly. Zoom control can be imprecise, and it's easy to overshoot in one direction or the other. On an even larger and thinner device, this can simply be uncomfortable. Holding the phone with one hand while simultaneously operating the button may turn out to be less natural than standard touch controls.
What Actually Works
Users' experiences indicate that Camera Control works best as a quick shortcut for launching the camera and taking photos. It makes sense and is convenient for these two applications. However, more advanced control still performs better on the screen.
Apple consistently develops its ideas, but in the case of the foldable, ergonomics will be key. Camera Control may be useful, but it could just as easily turn out to be an accessory that most people use only occasionally.
