Apple is getting closer to the release of the first MacBook Pro with OLED screens. A new report suggests that display production has reached a key milestone, allowing Apple to avoid availability issues during the debut of the M6 series.
Samsung has reached an important OLED production milestone
Samsung is responsible for the production of OLED screens for the new MacBook Pro models. According to the report, the company has already surpassed the level of 90% functional panels in the production process of the new generation of OLED 8.6G. This is a very important moment because in the display industry, this level is considered safe enough to start mass production. Samsung is reportedly set to begin mass production of OLED panels as early as next month. Currently, the company has the capacity to produce about 2 million displays, which should be enough for the first wave of new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros with M6 chipsets. Thanks to high production efficiency, Apple will also be able to reduce losses associated with defective panels and lessen the pressure to lower screen prices.
MacBook Pro will undergo the biggest change in years
The new models are set to feature not only OLED but also a thinner chassis and a new display design with a punch-hole cutout instead of the classic notch. Leaks also suggest the inclusion of touch screen support, which would be one of the biggest changes in MacBook history. The report indicates that OLED will be exclusive to models with M6 Pro and M6 Max chips.
Cheaper configurations will still utilize earlier versions of MacBook Pro based on M5 Pro and M5 Max processors, allowing Apple to maintain a lower price threshold. The Chinese manufacturer BOE is also working on OLEDs for laptops, but currently, Samsung has a significant technological and production advantage. According to the report, competition from BOE may have accelerated the development of OLED technology for MacBooks.
Samsung has reached a key milestone in the production of OLED screens for the new MacBook Pro models with M6 chips. Apple is set to avoid issues with the launch and is preparing the biggest changes to the MacBook Pro series in many years.
