LG has officially presented its first LCD televisions with RGB LED backlighting, which will hit the market in 2026. The new line will be sold under the name LG Micro RGB evo and will include three series – MRGB95B, MRGB9M, and MRGB85B. This is a significant move, as while Samsung, Sony, Hisense, and TCL have been linked for months with plans to introduce LCD televisions with full RGB LED, LG is the first to publicly announce ready models. Further premieres in this category are expected during CES 2026.
What is Micro RGB evo?
Unlike traditional Mini LED (with white diodes and color filters), RGB LED uses separate red, green, and blue diodes for backlighting. Theoretically, this allows for:
significantly increasing the color volume,
reducing light loss,
improving color accuracy in HDR.
LG markets its technology as Micro RGB evo, although similar solutions from competitors will operate under different names.
Alpha 11 arrives at LCD
The most interesting decision is to move the Alpha 11 (Gen 3) processor – previously reserved for OLEDs – to flagship LCD TVs. According to LG:
the processor utilizes Dual AI Engine,
offers Dual Super Upscaling, which means simultaneous processing of two image scaling algorithms,
is responsible for more advanced RGB backlight control.
This is a clear signal that LG considers Micro RGB as a new premium segment, rather than just a curiosity next to Mini LED.
Over 1000 zones – and here comes the question mark
LG declares that the top model MRGB95B will be equipped with RGB LED backlighting with over a thousand local dimming zones. This is a result that undoubtedly places the television in the premium segment, but it also raises natural questions about the real advantage over the best Mini LEDs available today on the market.
The most advanced constructions of the competition can utilize dozens, even over 20 thousand dimming zones, which translates into very precise contrast control and reduction of the halo effect in traditional LCD televisions. In the case of LG Micro RGB evo, the advantage should not come from the mere number of zones but rather from the quality of emitted light, its purity, and how the red, green, and blue diodes are controlled by the Alpha 11 processor. This represents a completely different approach, which only practical tests will show whether a smaller number of zones can be offset by more precise and “cleaner” RGB backlighting.
100% Rec.2020 – ambitious declaration
An equally ambitious announcement concerns colors. LG promises 100% coverage of the Rec.2020 color space, which has been confirmed by an Intertek certificate. The manufacturer claims that the new Micro RGB evo TVs can fully reproduce not only BT.2020 but also DCI-P3 and Adobe RGB, offering – according to LG – the highest possible level of color reproduction in consumer TVs. However, it is worth looking at these declarations with a certain degree of skepticism. Although full Rec.2020 looks impressive on paper, real video content is still almost exclusively produced in the DCI-P3 space, for films, series, and games alike. This means that a large portion of this color potential remains untapped today. Therefore, Micro RGB evo may be more of a technological demonstration of capabilities and an investment in the future rather than a feature that will immediately translate into a clearly better image in everyday use.
Three Micro RGB Series – Up to 100 Inches
LG has officially announced the MRGB95B series, but it is already known that there are plans for three product lines:
Model | Positioning | Panel | Backlight | Processor | HDR | System | Additional Features | Diagonal Sizes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
LG MRGB95B | Flagship | 4K LCD | RGB LED with local dimming (over 1000 zones) | Alpha 11 Gen 3 | Dolby Vision | webOS 26 | Maximum brightness and precise RGB control | 75”, 86”, 100” |
LG MRGB9M | Premium | 4K LCD | RGB LED (number of zones – TBC) | TBC | Dolby Vision | webOS 26 | Wireless Zero Connect module (new generation 2026) | TBC |
LG MRGB85B | Mid-range | 4K LCD | RGB LED with fewer zones | TBC | Dolby Vision | webOS 26 | Simplified picture features, lower price | TBC |
All models will receive webOS 26, which introduces:
more personalized start screen My Page,
new AI-based features,
further integration of user profiles.
LG challenges Mini LEDs and OLEDs
Micro RGB evo looks like LG's strategic response to the development of RGB LEDs by competitors and the growing limitations of OLEDs in very large diagonals. Whether RGB LEDs will actually prove to be a breakthrough – or just another very expensive premium segment – will only be shown by tests. LG will reveal more details during CES 2026, where we will also see new OLED TVs for 2026.
