If you move around often, there’s a good chance that Google Maps is a regular part of your daily life. The app has been around for years and has been steadily evolving, but this time Google is adding something much bigger than just cosmetic improvements. Since Gemini is already making its way into almost every Google product, it was only a matter of time before it landed in Maps as well. And it has happened. As reported by 9to5Google, new features based on Gemini are starting to roll out on Android, and will later appear in Android Auto and iOS.
The most important change? Gemini will replace the old voice command system. The previous solution worked, but it wasn’t very intelligent. Now, it’s supposed to be more natural, as if you’re talking to a buddy who helps you get to your destination. You can ask multi-step questions, specify your route, and use integrations with other Google services. Finally, it will also be easier to report incidents on the road.
It's not just numbers and distance
Gemini will start to suggest in a more "human" way – the navigation will point out characteristic landmarks and orient you based on your surroundings, not just based on meters to the turn. Additionally, there will be the option to quickly report an accident or obstruction, which will help other drivers.
Early Warnings About Traffic Jams
Gemini is also supposed to alert you about possible traffic issues even before you hit the road. This way, you can better plan your trip and avoid surprises.
The update might not appeal to everyone, but most users should experience a real improvement in comfort. The features are already being rolled out on Android, and soon they will also be available on Android Auto and iOS. It's worth checking the latest version of the app to see if Gemini is already available on your device.
