Windows 11 ready for 1000 Hz+ displays. Microsoft lifts the existing refresh rate limits.

Calendar 3/13/2026

The latest update for Windows 11 removes the technological barrier of 1000 Hz for refresh rates. This change paves the way for fully utilising the upcoming next-generation monitors that surpass the previous limits of smoothness offered by gaming panels.

Response to 1040 Hz Monitors

The introduced changes are a direct response to the dynamic development of hardware that we could observe, among other things, during the recent CES exhibition. It was there that the first panels were presented, including designs from Samsung, offering a refresh rate of 1040 Hz. Until now, the Windows system had not been able to natively support such high values, which posed a systemic limitation for the fastest panels available on the market. The new builds numbered 26100.8106 and 26200.8106 (KB5079387) implement the necessary changes in the code, allowing for smooth image rendering at record frequency.

Availability in the Release Preview channel

New functionalities have now arrived in the Release Preview channel for versions 24H2 and 25H2. This means that once the testing phase is complete, the solution will be made available to all users of stable releases of Windows 11 as part of the standard system update. In addition to unlocking refresh rate limits, the KB5079387 fix focuses on the stability of the system kernel for collaboration with the most efficient graphics processors, preparing the ecosystem for upcoming hardware releases.
