The foldable iPhone will retain Camera Control, but does it make sense with a large screen?

According to the latest leaks, Apple still wants to develop its idea of physical camera control. In the upcoming iPhone Fold, there is set to be a Camera Control button, even though the device is expected to be exceptionally thin. This is quite surprising, as incorporating such a feature into a foldable phone requires significant space optimisation. However, Apple apparently believes it is worth it.

The idea sounds good in theory

The premise is simple. Foldable phones are large, so often you need to use both hands. Camera Control aims to bypass this and allow you to take photos with one hand, controlling the zoom and settings without touching the screen. It seems sensible, especially for those taking photos on the move.

The problem is that even in current models like the iPhone 16 Pro, this button does not always work perfectly. Zoom control can be imprecise, and it’s easy to overdo it one way or another. On an even larger and thinner device, it could simply be uncomfortable. Holding the phone with one hand while simultaneously operating the button may turn out to be less natural than standard touch control.

What Actually Works

User experiences indicate that Camera Control works best as a quick shortcut for launching the camera and taking photos. In these two applications, it makes sense and is convenient. However, more advanced controls are still better suited for the screen.

Apple consistently develops its ideas, but for the foldable device, ergonomics will be key. Camera Control may be useful, but it could just as easily turn out to be an add-on that most people use only occasionally.
