Spider-Noir is a new live-action series set in the Spider-Man universe, which is set to differ significantly from classic superhero stories. The creator of the production, Oren Uziel, revealed new details about the series and the collaboration with Nicolas Cage.
Spider-Man in a 1930s Noir Setting
The series will tell the story of an older and much more experienced hero than previous versions of Spider-Man. Nicolas Cage will portray Ben Reilly, a private detective operating in 1930s New York, who has long since abandoned his superhero past. When criminals with supernatural abilities begin to appear in the city, the hero is forced to don his mask once again. The creators emphasise that the inspiration came from classic noir films featuring actors such as Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney.
Nicolas Cage became heavily involved in the role
Oren Uziel revealed that Cage approached the project very seriously and knew the scripts practically by heart during the first rehearsals. The actor was said to regularly propose his own ideas inspired by classic film noir, and the creators wanted to create a version of Spider-Man that was completely different from all previous screen interpretations. According to the showrunner, the series aims to depict a character who is more mentally broken and weary of life than earlier versions of the character.
Creators want to avoid the typical superhero vibe
Uziel believes that Spider-Noir may also appeal to viewers tired of classic superhero productions. The series is intended to be more of a detective story and a noir drama than a traditional Marvel spectacle. A strong emphasis has been placed on visual style, the atmosphere of old cinema, and more filmic framing reminiscent of comics. The project is also led by producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creators of the animated Spider-Verse. Spider-Noir will debut on 27th May on Prime Video and MGM+. The creators also admit that they see potential for further seasons of the series.
Spider-Noir is meant to be a completely different take on Spider-Man. Nicolas Cage will portray an older, dark hero set in the noir atmosphere of the 1930s, and the series is expected to deviate significantly from classic superhero productions.
