Samsung has finally responded to the rather unconventional LG StanbyME television. In South Korea, the Moving Style Edge has just launched — a new Samsung smart TV with a vertical stand that can be placed practically anywhere in the home. Sounds familiar? Yes, it's a very similar approach to what LG showcased at the end of 2023.
Television on a stand? Yes, but Samsung style
Unlike LG, which built a separate screen for StanbyME, Samsung decided to take a shortcut: it took its Smart Monitor M7 and added a new, dedicated stand.
This stand is 81 cm high, which the company claims is sufficient for comfortable viewing from a sofa, desk, chair, or even the floor, if one prefers. The monitor itself has 32 inches, which is more than LG's 27-inch screen. It features 4K, 300 nits brightness, and 60 Hz, which is alright for YouTube, Netflix, and daily use, but let’s not kid ourselves – it’s definitely not OLED.
Two models, several colours and one common feature
Samsung offers two variants:
Moving Edge Standard – with an “L” shaped base, for 879,000 won (approx. £479)
Moving Edge Lite – with a simpler “I” base, for 839,000 won (approx. £455)
Both stands are adjustable and allow for rotating the screen portrait/landscape, so if someone enjoys TikTok or vertical Reels – they will be pleased. Interesting fact: the screen can be detached and replaced with another Samsung Smart Monitor – even up to 55 inches.
In addition, there is a wide selection of colours – for both the screen and the stand – as well as optional shelves mounted at the base.
System? Tizen. Touch? No. Battery? Neither.
The television operates on Tizen, so it has all the streaming apps and integration with SmartThings. Inside: Wi-Fi 5, HDMI, USB, 10W speakers. But – and here is an important caveat – this is not a tablet. Unlike the StanbyME 2 from LG, the Samsung screen:
does not have touch
does not work without a cable
does not have a battery
So you can't put it on the balcony and watch a film on a deckchair unless you have an extension lead.
Samsung is also launching a campaign “Moving Style 202” with the slogan “Connect freely, create your own way.” There are supposed to be as many as 202 possible combinations when accounting for variations in screens, colours, and stands. To kick things off, the company will distribute 70 televisions to creators from Korea, who will demonstrate how this device can be used in various contexts – both homey and a bit more “showy.”
So far, there is no information about the release outside of Korea, but given that StanbyME and StanbyME 2 are globally available, the chances of export are quite high.
