Roku has been sued in a class action lawsuit in California. The company is accused of releasing faulty system updates that allegedly caused serious issues with the functioning of Smart TVs, and in some cases, completely disabled them.
Defective updates were causing issues for Roku and TCL televisions
The lawsuit covers Roku Select Series, Plus Series televisions, and TCL models from series 3, 4, 5, and 6 operating on the Roku TV platform. According to the allegations, system updates led to issues such as black screens, device freezes, and a complete inability to use the television. Lawyers representing users claim that the updates "materially degraded the performance of the devices," and some televisions have practically been "bricked." According to the lawsuit, users repeatedly reported issues with the system's performance to Roku. However, the company reportedly did not provide effective solutions or adequate technical support. Now consumers are seeking compensation and a court order compelling Roku to fix the problems. The lawsuit also includes TTE Technology, responsible for TCL North America's operations.
Another lawsuit against Smart TV platforms
The Case of the Year appears shortly after a similar lawsuit against Amazon concerning older Fire TV devices. More and more users are noticing that modern televisions and streaming devices are heavily reliant on system updates and manufacturer support. Software issues are becoming one of the biggest challenges in the Smart TV market, especially for devices that continue to operate for many years after purchase.
Roku and TCL are facing a class action lawsuit over faulty Smart TV updates. Users claim that some televisions have essentially been rendered unusable due to issues with the Roku TV system.
