In the world of gaming, the arms race never ends. Especially when it comes to the race for the number of Hz. Not long ago, it seemed that 240Hz was the peak of today's monitors, but Philips and other manufacturers decided to raise the stakes. The Philips 27M2N5500XD model from the Evnia 5000 series has just debuted on the market, offering an astonishing refresh rate of 1000Hz as one of the first.
Dual-Mode: Choose between resolution and speed
The biggest novelty in this model is the Dual-Mode feature, which allows the user to decide what is a priority for them at a given moment. In standard mode, the monitor offers a resolution of QHD (2560 x 1440) with a refresh rate of 540Hz (when overclocked). This alone places it firmly among the top e-sports screens. However, if you are a professional gamer for whom every millisecond matters, you can switch the monitor to 1000Hz mode. The price for such speed is a reduction in resolution to 720p (1280 x 720), which aims to provide unprecedented clarity of motion.
Fast IPS Matrix and Solid Colours
The Philips 27M2N5500XD is built around a 27-inch Fast IPS panel. Despite the heavy emphasis on speed, the manufacturer has not forgotten about image quality:
Colours: 10-bit depth and excellent coverage of the DCI-P3 colour space (96%) and sRGB (100%).
Brightness: 350 nits in SDR mode and up to 500 nits in HDR mode (certified VESA DisplayHDR 400).
Precision: The monitor comes with factory calibration (Delta E < 2), ensuring accurate colour reproduction right out of the box.
The only downside here is the contrast, which should not surprise anyone. The Fast IPS panel used in this particular model is said to offer a contrast ratio of 2000:1.
Will technology keep up with refresh rates?
Experts (for example, from TFT Central) approach these announcements with a degree of caution. The main question remains whether the IPS panel will be physically able to keep up with a refresh rate of 1000Hz. To avoid the effect of motion blur (smearing/ghosting), pixels would need to change their state in less than 1 ms G2G in an absolutely repeatable manner. History shows that at such extreme speeds, older TN panels or OLED matrices performed better. How will it be for Philips? We will find out after the first tests.
Availability of Philips 27M2N5500XD
At the moment, the Philips 27M2N5500XD monitor has appeared on the official manufacturer's website in China. We are awaiting information regarding the European premiere and the official price, which is certainly going to be high.
