Five years after the debut of the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, Microsoft has announced another price increase in the USA. This is quite an unusual phenomenon – in previous generations, consoles became cheaper over time, but now their prices are rising for the second time this year (the previous change occurred in May 2025).
Despite the aging hardware, gamers will pay more – also for games, the base price of which has risen from $70 to $80 since 2025. Microsoft explains the decision in an official statement:
“We understand that these changes are difficult and have been made after careful consideration. Looking ahead, we are focused on providing more ways to play more games on any screen and delivering value to Xbox players.”

For comparison...
The Xbox Series X cost $500 at launch in November 2020.
In May 2025, the price increased to $600, and it now stands at $650.
The PlayStation 5 has also gone up in price, but it is worth noting that the newer and more powerful PS5 Pro is priced at $750 – only slightly more expensive than the Xbox Series X (1TB).
It seems that the current generation of consoles will go down in history as the first where prices are systematically rising instead of falling.
