LG Display will showcase an innovative, stretchable OLED display designed for infotainment systems at the SID Display Week 2025. The panel can increase its length by 50%, while maintaining a pixel density of up to 100 DPI. At rest, it offers a higher resolution, which decreases when fully stretched – but remains legible and useful.
A touch that can be felt!
LG aims to replace traditional physical buttons and separate central screens with one flexible panel that integrates touch functions with physical feedback. The screen can bulge when touched, creating 'bulged' buttons, allowing drivers to operate the system without taking their eyes off the road.
In addition to the flagship stretchable panel, LG Display will also showcase:
18-inch retractable OLED – housed in the ceiling, primarily intended for rear seat passengers.
57-inch 'pillar-to-pillar' display – stretches across the entire dashboard, complementing the already available smaller 40-inch versions on the market.
From prototype to the future of the market
LG is not stopping at just impressive prototypes. The company plans to showcase a new type of OLED screens using blue phosphorescent materials known as PHOLED. What does this offer? Greater brightness and lower energy consumption – which is something that electric car manufacturers particularly value.
We write more about this technology in the article below:
LG has been developing stretchable OLEDs for years – the first prototype was revealed in 2022. However, commercialisation is delayed. The company is also working on stretchable MicroLED screens, while competitor Samsung Display previously showcased similar QD-OLED technologies that have still not reached mass production.
Not only cars, there are other possibilities too!
Although the current presentations focus on automotive, LG anticipates the application of this technology in wearable electronics, smartphones, and other devices as well. Stretchable OLEDs could completely change the way we design and interact with consumer electronics.
