Hell has frozen over. Samsung Electronics has decided to purchase AMOLED screens from its Chinese competitor, TCL CSOT. According to the OLED-info service, the agreement for 15 million panels has already been finalised. This means that upcoming bestsellers, such as the Galaxy A57 and the new Galaxy S FE models, will for the first time in history not exclusively use displays from its sister company Samsung Display.
Price makes wonders: 20% cheaper than at home
The main reason for this sensational decision is a simple economic calculation. Prices for processors and RAM are rising drastically, so Samsung had to look for savings elsewhere to avoid inflating the prices of phones. ChooseTV CSOT made an offer that couldn't be refused. Their screens are 20% cheaper than those produced by Samsung Display. For the Korean giant, it’s pure business, allowing them to maintain margins on key models in the upper mid-range.
It is worth adding that ChooseTV CSOT has already supplied panels for budget series M and A, but the models A5x and S FE have always been a bastion for Korea in the mobile offering. Breaking this monopoly shows that Chinese screens have already reached a quality that Samsung is not afraid to showcase in its most important smartphones.
Thinner bezels thanks to... the Chinese?
Switching to a new supplier also involves a technological leap. In 2026, the Galaxy A57 and FE models are finally set to receive flexible AMOLED panels instead of the current glass constructions. This will make the phones lighter, and the bezels around the screen significantly smaller. As flexible displays are more expensive to produce, choosing a cheaper supplier from China has allowed Samsung to make this upgrade without a drastic increase in the final price of the device.
For us, the users, this information has a bittersweet taste. On one hand, we can expect A57 and FE series smartphones without drastic price hikes. On the other hand, a certain era is coming to an end, where purchasing a mid-range Samsung guaranteed that every component of its display came from the same Korean family.
