If you often move around, there’s a good chance that Google Maps is a regular part of your daily life. The app has been around for years and consistently evolves, but this time Google is adding something much bigger than cosmetic fixes. Since Gemini is already making its way into almost every Google product, it was only a matter of time before it landed in Maps too. And it has happened. According to 9to5Google, new features powered by Gemini are beginning to roll out on Android, and will later appear on Android Auto and iOS.
The most significant change? Gemini will replace the old voice command system. The previous solution worked, but it wasn’t particularly intelligent. Now, it’s supposed to feel more natural, as if you were chatting with a mate who’s helping you get to your destination. You can ask questions in multiple steps, refine your route, and make use of integrations with other Google services. Finally, it will also be easier to report incidents on the road.
It's not just about numbers and distance
Gemini will start to give hints in a more "human" way – the navigation will indicate notable points and orient you according to your surroundings, not just based on metres to the turn. Additionally, there will be the possibility to quickly report an accident or obstruction, which will help other drivers.
Early Traffic Jam Warnings
Gemini is also meant to warn about possible traffic issues before you set off on your journey. This way, you can plan your trip more easily and avoid surprises.
The update may not cater to everyone's taste, but most users should feel a tangible improvement in comfort. The features are already being rolled out on Android, and soon they will also be available on Android Auto and iOS. It's worth checking the latest version of the app to see if Gemini is already available on your device.
