AirPods Max 2 officially. Apple focuses on the H2 chip and lossless sound via USB-C.

Calendar 3/17/2026

Apple has presented the second generation of its flagship over-ear headphones – AirPods Max 2. Although the visual design remains true to the original, key changes have occurred inside the device. Thanks to the implementation of the H2 processor, the headphones have gained features previously known only from the smaller Pro models, as well as completely new capabilities based on Apple Intelligence artificial intelligence.

H2 Chip

The main novelty in AirPods Max 2 is the H2 chip, which has replaced the ageing H1 unit. According to Apple, the new architecture has allowed for a 1.5 times increase in the efficiency of active noise cancellation (ANC) compared to the first generation. The computational audio algorithms are now better equipped to handle low frequencies, such as engine noise or the hustle and bustle in a train.

Along with the new chip for headphones came intelligent features: Adaptive Sound, which smoothly switches between ANC and Contact modes depending on the environment, and "Conversation Detection," which automatically mutes the music when the user starts to talk. The Voice Isolation mode has also been improved, which, with the help of more sensitive microphones, has a more precise ability to cut out background noise during phone calls.

USB-C, lossless audio and support for creators

Apple was forced to unify the charging standard. The Lightning port has been replaced with USB-C. Importantly, this socket is not only used for power – when a cable is connected, the headphones support 24-bit lossless audio.

A novelty (not yet available in Poland) is the Live Translation feature, operating within Apple Intelligence, which enables communication in foreign languages directly through the headphones. For podcasters and vocalists, a studio-quality audio recording mode has been prepared, and the Digital Crown dial has gained a camera remote function, allowing for remote shutter release on the iPhone. The headphones also received a Gaming mode, which minimises latency in wireless signal transmission on iOS, macOS and iPadOS systems.

The AirPods Max 2 headphones have been priced at $549 (£2,499). Orders can be placed from 25 March, and the product will go on regular sale at the beginning of next month. The new generation is available in five colours: space, moonlight glow, orange, purple, and blue.
