TCL is making a significant move towards unifying its software ecosystem. The Chinese giant has prepared a firmware update labelled v590, which marks the end of the fun with Android 12 for many users and introduces the latest Android 14 system. Importantly, the update is not just about refreshing the interface but also implements new features.
What is HDMI QMS
A key element of the new software is support for HDMI 2.1 QMS. This solution addresses one of the most annoying issues with televisions – the brief screen blackout while matching the refresh rate to the content being played. Thanks to QMS, in collaboration with devices like Apple TV 4K, the transition from the system's 60Hz to cinema's 24Hz occurs seamlessly for the viewer.
New Super Resolution Feature
Update v590 also introduces TCL's proprietary solutions for image processing. The Super Resolution function has been added to the picture settings menu. This is intelligent upscaling designed to extract more detail from lower quality films. Additionally, TCL has included new HDR conversion options, so the image should be "more vivid and better suited to the capabilities of the panel." Of course, according to leaks and user experiences from AVForums, the new Android is expected to operate more smoothly, faster, and the TV will have better-optimised energy-saving modes.
The update is intended for models with the MediaTek Pentonic 700 processor. This is the heart of most popular TCL models from the last two years. If you don't see the update notification in the menu yet, don't worry – the process is just starting now and soon the "check for update" feature should show a new version available for download.
