Roku sued for "bricking" TVs. It's about faulty system updates.

Roku has been sued in a class action in California. The company is accused of releasing faulty system updates that have caused serious issues with the operation of Smart TVs, and in some cases completely immobilising them.

Faulty updates were causing issues with Roku and TCL TVs

The lawsuit includes Roku Select Series, Plus Series, and TCL models from series 3, 4, 5, and 6 operating on the Roku TV platform. According to the allegations, system updates were leading to issues such as black screens, device freezes, and complete inability to use the television. Lawyers representing users claim that the updates "materially worsened the performance of the devices," and some TVs have basically been "bricked." According to the lawsuit, users repeatedly reported issues related to system performance to Roku. However, the company allegedly did not provide an effective solution or adequate technical support. Now consumers are seeking damages and a court order compelling Roku to resolve the issues. The lawsuit also includes TTE Technology, responsible for managing TCL North America.

This is another lawsuit against Smart TV platforms

The Case of the Year comes shortly after a similar lawsuit against Amazon regarding older Fire TV devices. More and more users are noticing that modern televisions and streaming devices are heavily reliant on system updates and manufacturer support. Software issues are starting to become one of the biggest challenges in the Smart TV market, particularly for devices that operate for many years after purchase.

Roku and TCL are facing a class action lawsuit concerning faulty Smart TV updates. Users claim that some TVs have been practically immobilised due to issues with the Roku TV system.
