Riot Games is stopping further development of its fighting game 2XKO, less than a year after its full release. The developers announced that active development of the game will end in December 2026. The title will remain available to players, but it will no longer receive additional seasons or major content updates. Riot has also decided to issue partial refunds for some purchases and to make all characters available at no extra charge.
Riot Games ends active development of 2XKO
Riot Games' decision is mainly related to player retention figures. The company admitted that retention metrics had not reached a level that would allow continued, stable funding of the game's development. Despite the positive reception of new champions such as Akali, Senna and Thresh, interest in the title did not grow at the expected rate. Active development of 2XKO is set to end in December 2026. Until then the developers plan to introduce the final two champions, Lux in September and Samira in October. After that the game will move into maintenance mode, and further seasons, Battle Passes and major content updates will no longer be developed.
Riot emphasises that the decision was not made suddenly. The team had considered, among other things, reducing staff numbers, changing the frequency of updates and overhauling the business model. Ultimately, however, it was decided that the best course of action would be to finish the planned content and gradually withdraw from active development.
Players will receive refunds and all champions will be unlocked
Riot Games has also prepared changes to make it easier for those who stay with 2XKO to keep playing. The company announced refunds of KO Points and Starter Edition purchases made before 20 August 2026. At the same time, all champions will be unlocked for free, so players won't have to buy characters to use the full roster. After active development ends the game will still run on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. However, Ranked Mode, Battle Passes and seasonal content will be removed. Riot plans to limit itself to maintaining the game and fixing any issues.
The end of development for 2XKO fits a broader trend of Riot scaling back projects not directly tied to its largest franchises. In recent years the company scaled back development on Legends of Runeterra, shut down Riot Forge and cancelled several other projects. Riot says, however, that it doesn't intend to stop experimenting completely and wants to try its hand at new genres again in the future.
2XKO will enter maintenance mode after active development ends in December 2026. Riot Games will refund selected purchases and make the full roster of heroes available to all players. Servers will remain online, but the game will no longer receive new seasons or major updates. The decision shows how difficult it can be for Riot Games to sustain new live service games outside its biggest franchises.
