It looks like Microsoft wants to go all in for the next generation of consoles. According to unofficial information, the premiere of the new Xbox is planned for the end of 2027, potentially even a year or two before PlayStation 6. If reports of the PS6 being delayed to 2028-2029 are confirmed, Microsoft could be the first to open a new chapter in the console war. The information comes from journalist Jez Corden from Windows Central, who revealed the current direction for the development of Xbox hardware and services.
Classic console, but with full Windows
The new Xbox is intended to remain a traditional console for the TV, rather than a handheld. At the same time, the company is not giving up on plans to create its own portable device in the future. The biggest change is expected to be the operating system. The hardware will run on the full version of Windows, which would mean access not only to games from the Xbox ecosystem but also to platforms like Steam. This also paves the way for games released on PC by Sony Interactive Entertainment. In practice, the console would be very close to a PC encased in an Xbox shell.
Advantage over PS6?
If Sony really does push the release of PS6 to 2028 or 2029, Microsoft may have exclusivity for the new generation for even two years. In the console industry, the first few months of sales often determine market dominance, so an earlier debut could be hugely significant. Microsoft is also said to be planning to "go hard" with the promotion of the new hardware, although the device is expected to be expensive regardless.
Changes may also affect Xbox Game Pass. Internal analyses are said to focus on expanding the Ultimate package to include additional subscriptions related to brands like World of Warcraft or Fallout. The goal would be to increase the value of the service, which has raised doubts among some players regarding its highest price point.
If the plans come to fruition, Xbox 2027 could overtake PS6 and simultaneously become the most PC-like console in the brand's history. Full Windows, access to external platforms, and a potential time advantage over Sony could completely change the balance of power in the next generation.
