Microsoft is expanding its gaming ecosystem and has just announced that Xbox Mode will be coming not only to handhelds but also to classic computers with Windows 11, including laptops, PCs, and tablets.
Xbox Mode or Console Interface on PC
Xbox Mode is essentially a fullscreen interface resembling a console, designed with gaming in mind. Instead of the classic Windows desktop, you get a streamlined menu, quick access to games, and a more "couch" experience.
The mode can be activated in several ways:
through the Xbox app
in the Game Bar settings
using a keyboard shortcut (Win + F11)
Why Microsoft is doing this
This is not a coincidence. Microsoft is increasingly competing with Linux-based solutions, such as SteamOS, which offer a simpler and more "console-like" experience on PC.
Expanding Xbox Mode to more devices is an attempt to:
simplify gaming on Windows
better accommodate handhelds and weaker hardware
bring PCs closer to the experience known from consoles
What it means for gamers
If the feature makes it to the stable version of the system, Windows could become much more gamer-friendly for those using a controller or playing on a TV.
It’s also a sign that Microsoft wants PC gaming to be just as convenient as on console, without the need to tinker with system settings.
Xbox Mode is a step towards connecting the world of PC and consoles, and its expansion could change the way we use Windows for gaming.
