LG Expands Boundaries: The Future of Automotive on Flexible OLED!

Calendar 5/7/2025

LG Display reveals flexible OLED screen for cars – a stretchable display redefining in-car UX and next-gen automotive technology.

LG Display will showcase an innovative, stretchable OLED display designed for infotainment systems at the SID Display Week 2025. The panel can increase its length by 50%, while maintaining a pixel density of up to 100 DPI. In its resting state, it offers a higher resolution, which decreases when fully stretched – but it still remains readable and useful.

A touch you can feel!

LG aims to replace traditional physical buttons and separate central screens with one flexible panel that integrates touch functionality with physical feedback. The screen can bulge when touched, creating "bulging" buttons, allowing drivers to operate the system without taking their eyes off the road.

In addition to the flagship stretchable panel, LG Display will also showcase:

  • 18-inch retractable OLED – hidden in the ceiling, primarily intended for rear seat passengers.

  • 57-inch "pillar-to-pillar" display – stretches across the entire dashboard, complementing the already existing smaller 40-inch versions on the market.

From Prototype to the Future of the Market

LG isn't just stopping at impressive prototypes. The company plans to showcase a new type of OLED screens using blue phosphorescent materials, PHOLED. What does this bring? Greater brightness and lower energy consumption – which is something that particularly matters to electric car manufacturers.

More about this technology can be found in the article below:

LG has been developing stretchable OLEDs for years – the first prototype was revealed in 2022. However, commercialisation has been delayed. The company is also working on stretchable MicroLED displays, and competitor Samsung Display previously showcased similar QD-OLED technologies that have still not reached mass production.

Not just cars, there are other possibilities too!

While the current presentations focus on motoring, LG anticipates the application of this technology in wearables, smartphones, and other devices as well. Stretchable OLEDs could completely change the way we design and interact with consumer electronics.
