iPhone Fold without Face ID. Apple is changing the camera design in the foldable smartphone

Calendar 3/12/2026

New information regarding the upcoming Apple foldable smartphone indicates a significant change in how the device will be unlocked. According to the latest reports, the iPhone Fold will not utilise Face ID technology or the distinctive Dynamic Island interface element. Instead, Apple is set to implement a small hole-punch camera in the display, similar to many Android smartphones.

Why Apple is Dropping Face ID

The main reason for this decision is the device's design. In the case of the foldable iPhone, the external screen is significantly thinner than in classic models, making it difficult to fit in the entire set of sensors needed for Face ID to work. For this reason, Apple has decided to return to Touch ID, which will be located in the power button. This solution is already known from some iPad models and older iPhones.

The new screen design also means a change in the look of the device's front. Instead of Dynamic Island, the foldable iPhone will feature a small cutout for the front camera. Apple also tested a more advanced solution in the form of a camera hidden under the screen, but the photo quality did not meet the company's expectations. Ultimately, a simpler and more proven variant was chosen.

Changes Also in Other Apple Devices

Interestingly, a similar design with a hole-punch camera may also appear in other Apple products. According to reports, this solution may also make its way into future models of MacBook Pro with a touchscreen, suggesting that the company plans to introduce a more consistent look across its devices.

The foldable iPhone is shaping up to be one of the most exciting projects from Apple in recent years. The move away from Face ID in favour of Touch ID and the implementation of a hole-punch camera show that the device’s design necessitates a new approach to hardware design. However, the official launch of the iPhone Fold is still awaited as Apple has yet to confirm the date for the device’s market release.
