The project is generating huge excitement, as it will not be just a standard adaptation of a game script, but a direct continuation (sequel) of the events from Baldur’s Gate 3. At the helm of the production will be Craig Mazin, the man responsible for the success of hits like Chernobyl and the series The Last of Us. Mazin, who has admitted to spending over 1000 hours in the game from Larian Studios, will serve as the writer, showrunner, and executive producer.
Continuation Without Larian Studios Involvement
The biggest surprise and point of contention for fans is the fact that the production of the series does not involve Larian Studios (the creators of Baldur's Gate). The developers responsible for the success of the third game confirmed that they are not participating in the script or the production itself. The rights to the brand belong to Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, who decided to entrust the project to HBO without the direct involvement of the game's creators. Although Michael Douse from Larian Studios did not hide his disappointment on social media, the company's CEO, Swen Vincke, is calming the mood, noting that Mazin (the creator of The Last of Us) is an authentic fan of the game, which gives hope for a high level of production.
The series is set to introduce a new team of adventurers, but familiar characters from the game will also appear on screen, with whom the new heroes will interact. Craig Mazin is reportedly planning to involve the voice actors from the game to reprise their roles in the live-action version, which would be a nod to loyal fans. Currently, Mazin is finishing work on the final season of The Last of Us, so we will have to wait for the premiere of Baldur's Gate, but the production machine has already started.
