Game Pass may soon become cheaper, which would be a sudden turn after the controversial price hikes.

Calendar 4/14/2026

It seems that Microsoft is starting to recognise the problem that gamers have been signalling for months. Following a significant price hike for Xbox Game Pass, particularly in the Ultimate variant, there has been a wave of cancellations and growing dissatisfaction among users. However, the situation might be about to change as leaks from an internal memo suggest the company is considering lowering the price of the service and implementing larger changes to its structure. This could be one of the most important moments in the history of Game Pass.

Microsoft admits that something isn't working

Revealed information indicates that the new head of the gaming division, Asha Sharma, has clearly pointed out the problem: Game Pass has simply become too expensive. Internal communications emphasised that the current model "is not final" and requires changes, both in the short and long term. This is quite a direct admission that a strategy, which was recently regarded as revolutionary, is starting to lose its appeal. After a price hike of up to 50%, many players began to question the sense of subscribing, especially when the price approached that of full-fledged premium services. Game Pass, which once was a symbol of "too good to be true," has started to be seen as another expensive subscription, rather than a must-have for every gamer.

New prices and more flexible plans

Everything suggests that Microsoft doesn't just want to lower prices but also to rebuild the entire system. Leaks reveal information about new, cheaper tiers with codenames Triton and Duet, which would mainly offer access to first-party games such as Halo, Gears of War, and Fallout. This implies a more flexible approach, where the user chooses how much they want to pay and for what range of content. Interestingly, these changes may be linked to other decisions, such as the potential removal of Call of Duty from Game Pass. If that happens, a return to lower prices seems almost necessary to maintain interest in the service. Microsoft thus faces a challenging task to find the balance between attractive pricing and a rich offering that will attract and retain players.

Everything suggests that Game Pass is entering a new phase. A cheaper and more flexible subscription could be the key to regaining players' trust, but much depends on how significant the actual changes will be.
