Apple releases iOS 26.5. Nearly 12 GB of updates and over 50 security fixes.

Calendar 5/12/2026

Apple has officially released the iOS 26.5 update along with new versions of the systems for iPads, Apple Watches, Macs, and Apple TVs. The update weighs nearly 12 GB and mainly focuses on bug fixes and security, although a few new features have also appeared.

iOS 26.5 adds RCS encryption and new Map features

The most important new feature is the introduction of end-to-end encryption for RCS messages between iPhones and Android devices. The feature is set to roll out gradually with supported carriers and will enhance the security of modern messaging, including high-quality photos, typing indicators, and expanded group chats. Apple has also added a new "Suggested Places" section in the Maps app. The system will suggest locations based on the user's location, popular spots nearby, and previous searches. According to earlier information, the update is also paving the way for ads in Apple Maps, which are expected to roll out later this summer.

Massive update mainly focuses on security fixes

While there aren't many new features, Apple emphasises the vast number of security patches. iOS 26.5 fixes over 50 different vulnerabilities and system bugs. The company also released new Pride Luminance wallpapers with dynamic colour effects. Other Apple devices received updates as well, including iPadOS, watchOS, macOS Tahoe, and visionOS. For macOS Tahoe, new subscription options appeared in the App Store, along with identical changes in Apple Maps as on iPhones.

iOS 26.5 doesn't bring a revolution but introduces important security fixes and a few new features related to RCS and Apple Maps. The update is quite large, but Apple is heavily focused this time on the stability and security of the system.
