Our verdict

The Samsung QN900F is a television that can make a tremendous impression. The greatest strength of this model is the combination of Mini-LED backlighting with a matte panel. This not only gives us decent blacks but, above all, incredible brightness and excellent readability in all conditions. During the day, in a brightly lit living room, it is probably the best-performing television in this year's Samsung offerings. Gamers will also find plenty to enjoy here – despite being an 8K screen, it can operate at a frequency of up to 165 Hz in 4K. Additionally, it comes with a full HDMI 2.1 package, VRR and ALLM features, and low input lag, so the QN900F is suitable for both next-generation consoles and PCs. The design also deserves great praise – when hung on the wall, with a thick metal frame, this model resembles a more luxurious version of the iconic The Frame. Combined with the matte panel and Art Store mode, it can indeed be treated as equipment that not only plays and lights up but also decorates the living room.

However, not everything is perfect. Despite its impressive specifications, local dimming management does not always perform as well as one might hope. Given the large number of zones, Samsung could refine its control over blacks and HDR effects – it is evident that the potential is immense, but it does not always translate into top-tier picture quality. Moreover, it is important to remember that 8K resolution is still more of a novelty than a genuine necessity, and the price of this model makes it easy to start looking for cheaper alternatives, including within Samsung's own offerings. Despite these reservations, the QN900F is a television that can undoubtedly impress. Its strength lies not in the 8K itself but in how it presents the image, how it looks, and the enjoyment it brings during use.

The TCL RM7L is a TV that can't be fairly assessed by measurements and charts alone. Although it isn't uncompromising kit, it more than holds its own in everyday use. It delivers a bright, dynamic and richly saturated picture, which makes it great for HDR content, gaming and fast-paced films. The RM7L doesn't chase perfect "reference-level" accuracy. Instead, it serves up an image that simply pleases the eye. In daily use there's little to fault. Google TV runs smoothly and provides access to a full suite of apps, and the generous set of gaming features means the TV performs just as well when connected to a console or PC as it does during an evening on the sofa. It's simply a versatile piece of kit that will suit most home uses. The most interesting aspect, though, is TCL's approach to backlighting. Rather than chasing numbers and inflating dimming zone counts, as with the C7L, they opted for RGB Mini-LED technology. The effect is genuinely intriguing. Although blacks and contrast are very good, in the most demanding scenes, with bright objects on a dark background, the halo can be slightly more noticeable than on the rival from the same stable. Interestingly, the glow itself takes on the colour of the displayed element, which makes it look much more natural and less distracting than on classic Mini-LED screens.

And that is where the dilemma appears. Placing the RM7L next to the TCL C7L, it's hard to deliver a clear, objective verdict. Both models cost almost the same, but represent two completely different backlight design philosophies. The C7L wins on dimming precision thanks to a larger number of zones, while the RM7L makes up for it with the distinctive, extremely pleasing-to-the-eye character of its RGB panel. Until recently the choice boiled down to a simple zone count; today, as TCL shows, the matter is much more interesting. If we had to choose between the two, the scales would tip slightly towards the C7L because of the higher zone count and equally impressive, saturated colours, but the final decision always depends on what an individual expects from their equipment.

The video accurately shows differences in contrast and black levels between TVs, as well as potential issues: halo around bright objects or Mini-LED zone operation visible as brightness jumps.

The QN900F is equipped with a VA panel, which in itself provides decent contrast, but that is not where its greatest strength lies. This is a mini-LED television, so we are dealing with local dimming technology, allowing specific zones of the image to be darkened. In the 65-inch variant, we counted as many as 1056 zones, which translated into really solid results. In the best possible scenario, the QN900F achieved a contrast ratio exceeding 100,000:1, which is absolutely impressive – at that moment, the black level was truly reminiscent of OLED. However, it must be remembered that it is not an OLED and has its classic mini-LED quirks. Since the television must decide which zone to brighten and which to darken, there are moments when the algorithm is not entirely sure what to do. This was the case, for example, in one of our test scenes, where the QN900F chose brightness over black depth, resulting in a significant drop in contrast to a level of 2300:1. Yes, the elements on screen were brighter, but around them, a characteristic glow (halo effect) was visible – the black then resembled a navy blue more. Generally, the black level on the QN900F is really very good – but not so good as to compare it with televisions featuring an organic panel.

Black performance on the TCL RM7L is really good. The combination of a high-contrast VA panel with a zone-based RGB Mini-LED backlight allows the TV to achieve very high contrast figures. In most of the scenes we measured, the results were good enough that dark parts of the image looked deep and convincing. The RM7L performs best in less demanding shots where black occupies a large portion of the screen and bright elements are relatively small. In such conditions contrast can reach six-figure values. As scene complexity increases, results gradually fall off, but that is a natural characteristic of any LCD TV using local dimming.

However, the RM7L has noticeably fewer zones than its counterpart using an SQD Mini-LED backlight. In the 65-inch version the difference is more than twofold, so you more often see more pronounced blooming around bright elements on a dark background. In terms of pure dimming precision, the RM7L is therefore not as accurate as the C7L. RGB Mini-LED has its own advantage here though. The bloom is not simply white, it takes on the color of the displayed element. A good example is the helicopter cockpit scene from Sicario 2, where a greenish bloom appears around the green lights instead of the typical bright halo known from conventional Mini-LED TVs. The halo effect is still visible, but because its color matches the image it is less distracting and looks more natural.

Ultimately we rate the RM7L and C7L similarly for black-level performance. The C7L controls the backlight better thanks to a larger number of zones, while the RM7L makes up for it with the character of its bloom. The bloom is somewhat larger, but its color blends better with the displayed image.

NOTE: Naturally, as the TV size increases the number of zones grows, yet we expect similar contrast results across RM7L sizes. It’s also worth adding that TCL lists the number of "color zones" in its product brochures, not the actual dimming zones. Since each color zone consists of three RGB channels, the advertised number should be divided by three. Therefore 1,344 color zones in the 65-inch unit we tested mean 448 actual dimming zones.

QN900F is truly a bright television – it can generate nearly 2000 nits, a figure that remains unattainable for most models available on the market. But the mere ability to achieve such brightness is not everything – it also matters whether the television can make good use of it. And here, it is not always perfect. Our tests on cinematic test patterns showed that in scenes such as those from Life of Pi or The Meg, the QN900F can truly shine – literally and metaphorically. In such moments, its greatest advantage, which is brightness, makes a huge impression. However, in more demanding scenes, challenges arise – similar to when assessing contrast. When smaller, bright elements appear on screen, the television often struggles with the decision: should it highlight them at the expense of black levels, or perhaps maintain deep blacks while toning down brightness. The result is situations where, for example, in the film Sicario 2, brightness dropped to just 200 nits, making details barely visible. Dimming algorithms could definitely be better for a television of this class.

TCL RM7L is a bright TV. In our measurements its peak brightness hovered around 1600 nits. That is clearly less than the C7L, which can approach 2600 nits, but in real film scenes the difference between the models is not that large. In less demanding shots with many bright elements, the RM7L can sustain about 1000 nits, and sometimes even a little more, getting close to 1500 nits. It performs worse in dark scenes with small points of light, where their brightness can fall to around 500 nits. This is not random behaviour. The TV intentionally dims fine details to better control the backlight and preserve higher contrast. That comes at the expense of their intensity, but it is typical behaviour for TVs with local dimming in a similar price bracket.

Colour gamut coverage

In HDR not only brightness matters but also colour. And here the RM7L has plenty to show. Colours are highly saturated and a wide colour gamut is one of its major strengths. In our DCI-P3 measurements it reached about 96%, and BT.2020 around 83%. It is worth remembering that on a TV with this kind of backlight the result can vary depending on the scene. On test patterns colours look best, while in films their saturation is sometimes a little lower than on SQD Mini LED or QD-OLED TVs. The construction of the backlight itself is also interesting. The RM7L does not use the classic red, green and blue LED set. TCL used two green LEDs and one blue, with the red produced by a PFS phosphor. This shows up in spectrometer measurements, but it does not have a major impact on the picture. Colours are still rendered correctly.

Testing the QN900F in Filmmaker mode, the characteristic features of the image were quickly noticeable, even though this mode is designed to reflect the director’s vision. The white balance was not perfect – the television displayed distinct deficiencies in the blue colour. This made the entire scene take on a warmer tone, as if someone had applied a subtle filter in shades of yellow and orange. In films where bright shots dominate – for example, scenes in the snow or in strong daylight – this gave the impression of slight warmth that did not always convey the director's intent. The second noticeable element was the management of brightness. The QN900F could sometimes brighten the image more than necessary. It looked as though the exposure had been slightly 'pulled up', causing the scene to lose its naturalness. Shadows were sometimes too shallow, and the contrast slightly weakened. These are not disqualifying errors, but for a television in this price range, it is evident that Filmmaker mode has not been perfected one hundred percent. This is particularly noticeable when we compare its image with what was seen after the screen calibration.

We checked the out-of-the-box colours in Filmmaker Mode, the best picture setting available to the user. TCL has been using it in its TVs for two years, and its aim is to reproduce the image as faithfully as possible in line with the creators' intent. On the RM7L it was indeed the most accurately set mode, although it was not without flaws. The biggest problem was the white balance. Too much red and blue made the image shift towards slightly pink tones. This was visible in both SDR and HDR. On top of that the brightness response was slightly boosted, making the picture appear a little brighter but at the same time less contrasty than it should be.

After calibration, we managed to eliminate errors in white balance and adjust them to a level that can be considered acceptable. It is not perfect, but it is definitely better than the factory settings. Most colour errors now lie within the deltaE 2–3 range, so in practice, they should not be noticeable during everyday viewing. However, the most significant improvement is evident in how the television manages brightness in SDR content. Shadows and details are no longer flattened, which gives the image depth and naturalness. As for 4K HDR material – colours themselves are no longer an issue, but some imperfections of Mini-LED technology can still be observed. The QN900F tends to dim the smallest bright elements too much, causing them to sometimes disappear from view. However, it should be noted that this is a much better solution than boosting the entire screen, which would spoil the contrast. This is more of a characteristic of this technology than a typical flaw, but it is worth keeping in mind. The effects of calibration are truly very good.

Thanks to the fairly extensive calibration menu we were able to correct the vast majority of the previously described issues. The biggest change concerned the white balance. After calibration it now looks very good, so the picture shed its pinkish tint and became much more neutral. The luminance response has also improved. Both the SDR gamma and the HDR EOTF curve are now much closer to the reference values. The picture is no longer unnecessarily brightened, and darker areas look more natural and have greater depth. Better luminance accuracy also affected the colours, which after calibration are noticeably more accurate. Not everything could, however, be set perfectly. With HDR material the RM7L still interprets part of the signal in its own way and does not always follow the reference curve precisely. This is most apparent in some darker scenes, where the TV can either slightly lift the shadows or darken them completely. That is where the earlier impression of a slightly brightened, less contrasty picture came from. Despite this, the calibration delivers a very good result. It removes the most visible errors and, above all, makes the picture much closer to how it should look.

QN900F performs really very well in terms of gradation. The tonal transitions are smooth and natural, without clear contours or banding. Interestingly, it is one of the few televisions that handles dark transitions better than light ones – we only noticed slight imperfections in heavily brightened scenes like that from the film Kingsman. In most cases, the picture simply looks very good and we have nothing to complain about.

The smoothness of tonal transitions on the RM7L is very good. In both bright and dark scenes the gradients are smooth and there is no visible colour banding. Minor issues only appear with exceptionally demanding material, such as our fourth test pattern featuring red water transitioning into black. It should be noted, however, that most televisions struggle to reproduce this scene perfectly. Therefore, in everyday use this should not pose a significant problem.

If we want to eliminate jarring tonal transitions that can be irritating, for example, while watching YouTube, we can use a feature called noise reduction. It works really effectively – it removes issues with colour blending when we set it to Standard level. However, as with most Samsung televisions, this does involve some compromises. Although we did not notice this feature significantly affecting the structure of objects in the image, it unfortunately reacts quite aggressively to film grain. Most people will likely appreciate this effect – the noise is simply removed – but if someone is looking for an image as close as possible to reference settings, we definitely recommend turning this option off.

When it comes to scaling, or dealing with very low-quality content, the QN900F performs really well. On the test card with the model, the image appeared clear, with only slight aliasing that shouldn't bother most viewers. However, it is worth mentioning one issue – the television sometimes has problems with so-called overscan, which can cause older content to be slightly cropped. This might manifest, for example, in subtitles disappearing from the bottom of the screen.

Upscaling and digital image processing are not the RM7L's strong suit. TCL has used the MediaTek Pentonic 700 chipset here, designated MT5896, which is not among the best processors when it comes to handling lower-quality source material. The biggest problems appear with heavily compressed content from YouTube or standard broadcast TV. The processor cannot effectively hide posterization and the characteristic banding between tones. The feature intended to smooth these issues does little to help, and can also interfere with the image too much, smoothing, for example, faces or fine textures. For that reason it is best simply not to use it.

Standard upscaling to 4K looks better. Lower-quality content is sufficiently sharp and retains an adequate amount of detail. It is not on a par with the best processors on the market, but for everyday viewing the result is entirely acceptable.

There really is nothing to complain about here – the QN900F looks very good in terms of motion. With a 165 Hz panel in 4K, it can confidently be said that this television is suitable for both watching sports and gaming. The motion enhancer plays a key role here. It works brilliantly – not only during sports broadcasts, where it can eliminate blurring and image shaking, but also in games, where the animation becomes clearer and smoother. And of course, if someone likes to experiment with films – they also have that option. At lower settings, a slight graininess and cinematic character can be seen, while at higher settings, it takes on a soap opera effect. In other words, everyone can adjust the picture to their preferences, and the television has the power to handle it.

The RM7L features a 144 Hz VA panel, so from the outset it is well suited to sports, gaming and other fast-paced content. The high refresh rate also gives the motion interpolation more scope, allowing it to generate additional frames. On the RM7L it works well and, with the right settings, can noticeably improve motion smoothness without an excessive soap opera effect.

It really is nice here. The QN900F offers a full set of features that we would expect from a top-end gaming television – we have VRR, ALLM, Game Bar, and also cloud gaming applications. However, the biggest standout is the proprietary motion smoother, which also works in games and – importantly – does not introduce noticeable lag. This is something we won't find with its other competitors. Unfortunately, there is also something concerning. This year, Samsung has evidently messed something up with its televisions. During the testing of the QN900F before its update, it had the HGIG feature, which allowed for perfect adjustment of HDR settings for the console. However, according to our procedures, we always update the equipment to the latest version – in order to give the manufacturer a chance to fix any shortcomings. And here… it turned out the opposite.After the update, the HGIG feature disappeared from the menu, making the correct configuration of the console for HDR practically impossible. It was supposed to be complete – 165Hz, four HDMI 2.1 ports, a full gaming package… but unfortunately, it turned out to be a small blunder. What a shame.

The RM7L earns almost nothing but praise when it comes to features for gamers. The TV supports ALLM, VRR and Dolby Vision Gaming and works properly with HGiG, so it’s hard to point to any major omissions in that regard. In practice this means automatic switching to a low-latency mode, smoother motion at variable frame rates and accurate brightness reproduction in HDR games. There’s also a very useful Game Bar. From it you can quickly check frame rate, VRR status, signal format or aspect ratio, and change the key settings without leaving the game. TCL has also added a few extra options, such as a crosshair overlay and brightening of dark image areas, which can be handy in some titles. The biggest drawback stems from the use of the Pentonic 700 processor. Only two of the four HDMI ports support the full HDMI 2.1 standard. That won’t matter much with a single console, but if you connect two consoles and a PC you may run out of ports, especially since one of those ports may be needed for eARC and a soundbar.

In terms of input lag, the QN900F presents a class of its own. Regardless of the set resolution or refresh rate, the response time remains instantaneous. It's one of those televisions where it's genuinely difficult to perceive any delay. Gamers can rely on complete responsiveness and the assurance that every action from the controller will be immediately mirrored on the screen. In this category, it is simply the highest tier.

Input lag on the RM7L is low. With a 120 Hz signal it drops below 10 ms, and at 60 Hz it is just under 15 ms. In practice the response to input is instantaneous, and even the lower figures known from OLEDs do not provide a clear advantage here. Dolby Vision Gaming also performs well. Input lag in this mode remains at the same level as in the other gaming modes, which still isn't standard on every TV.

The photo shows the legibility of small fonts. Ideally, lines should be the same thickness on both light and dark text, with minimal pixel gaps.

QN900F is an 8K television, so even in a larger size, it can be treated as a legitimate work monitor – of course, provided that someone can actually fit such a colossus on their desk. The device supports 4:4:4 chroma, so overall font readability is good, though we noticed some issues with the thinnest lines. This may stem from the fact that at a native 8K resolution, some texts are simply so microscopic that the television is not necessarily ideally suited for it. It sounds a bit absurd, but how else can we explain it? 😉

On the other hand, the QN900F can be a great choice for PC gamers. It supports G-Sync technology, and at a 4K resolution, it offers refresh rates of up to 165 Hz. So if you have a very powerful computer, the QN900F will allow it to spread its wings and showcase its gaming prowess in all its glory.

Using the RM7L with a computer performs very well, especially if you treat it as a gaming display. The TV supports 4K at 144 Hz, and dropping to Full HD can raise the refresh rate to as much as 288 Hz. It also supports G-Sync and FreeSync, so there's little to criticise in terms of smoothness. Text handling is a bit poorer. At the maximum refresh rate, letters viewed from very close are not perfectly sharp and you can notice a faint shadow behind them. Switching to 120 Hz improves matters, though they're still not perfect. However, it's hard to regard this as a serious flaw, because given the sizes in which the RM7L is available, it's unlikely to be used on a desk as a monitor for document work.

The viewing angles on the QN900F are really quite good, but we have the impression that the 'Ultra Viewing Angle' coating that Samsung heavily advertises performs worse than last year. Yes – the effect is still much better than in most LCD TVs with VA panels, but it still falls short of OLEDs or good IPS panels. The image holds up decently when viewed from the side, and the colours don't fade as quickly as in standard VAs, however, we expected something more, especially since previous generations from Samsung have performed better. Perhaps the additional matte coating that has appeared in this year's 8K series is having an effect on this.

Viewing angles on the RM7L are quite good and among the better ones you will find in TVs with VA panels. Even when looking at the screen from the side, colours do not shift as much as in many conventional VA designs. In that respect the RM7L can be compared to the better WHVA panels used in higher TCL ranges such as the C8L or X11L. There is, however, one clear downside. As the viewing angle increases, image brightness falls off very quickly. Colours and the overall character of the image remain relatively intact, but the screen itself becomes noticeably darker. At very large off axis angles the difference is already enough that the picture can simply look too dark. For that reason the RM7L is best viewed as close to the centre of the screen as possible.

One of the innovations in 8K from Samsung is the matte display. This year, the Koreans have been gradually "mattifying" their televisions, and it must be said that the QN900F is at the very top of the game in this regard – reflections are suppressed better than in any other model on the market. In practice, this means that even in a brightly lit living room, the picture remains clear, and reflections nearly disappear from the screen. Of course, such a coating also comes at a cost. Colours lose some intensity, and black does not appear as deep under strong light as on shiny screens. But this is more of a detail than a real problem, as the richness of colours and depth of black are most important in the evening, with the lights turned off – and then this effect completely disappears.

The RM7L should perform well in a bright living room, primarily thanks to its high SDR brightness. With everyday content the television averages around 1000 nits, so it can easily cut through ambient light entering the room and maintain a clear image even during the day. A weak point is the panel's glossy coating. Direct reflections are quite noticeable, and stronger light sources can also spread across the screen surface. For that reason it's best not to position the television opposite a window or a lamp. With correct placement, however, the RM7L will still be a very good choice for a brightly sunlit room.

Television Features

QN900F really has a lot to offer. In addition to standard connections and tuners, it also boasts many typical television features. There is teletext, a clear EPG, and even a PiP function, which is rare these days. The QN900F easily supports other devices using the solar remote included in the package, which somewhat compensates for the lack of recording from the built-in antenna tuners.

Smart TV

When it comes to smart features, Samsung, as always, provides plenty – there is a vast number of applications (though not all), and the Tizen on the QN900F ran very smoothly. It is also hard to find a better television for connecting external devices – AirPlay, Miracast, Chromecast – everything works flawlessly. A curiosity is the Art Gallery mode, which - similar to The Frame - allows you to display artworks on the turned-off screen. Thanks to its relatively thick, robust frame, the effect is quite impressive – on the wall, it looks like a digital painting and can certainly make an impression on someone. Therefore, the QN900F can be whimsically dubbed The Frame Super Extra Pro 😉

Smart TV features

The RM7L runs on Google TV, which is great news, because it’s one of the most polished systems on the market today. The store has pretty much everything: from the major streaming platforms to lesser-known apps, so you really don’t need to worry about a lack of content. There are also the classics on board, Chromecast and AirPlay, which make it easy to cast from your phone to the big screen. An interesting change is that the previous Google Assistant has been replaced by Gemini. The new "artificial brain" understands natural speech better and can answer questions much more sensibly. Everything runs smoothly and delivers exactly what we expect from a TV today.

Traditional TV

If someone prefers channel surfing to streaming, they’ll be pleased with the traditional remote control. It has a full numeric keypad and plenty of physical buttons, so operating the TV is quite straightforward, without having to wade through on‑screen menus. In terms of TV features it’s simply solid. The electronic programme guide (EPG) and channel switching work flawlessly, although you won’t find additional features like PiP or PVR.

The built-in media player in the QN900F works really well. During testing, we did not notice any major problems with handling various audio and video formats – you can verify this yourself in our file listing. The only puzzling issue arose with subtitles – only those saved in .txt format worked for us, despite Samsung's information that the television should support significantly more extensions. What could be the reason for this? It's hard to say. It is possible that this is just a temporary bug that will be fixed in one of the upcoming updates.

The built-in media player in the RM7L performs very well. The TV handled most of our test material with ease, whether films, photos or music. Shortcomings do occur, of course, but they mostly affect less common formats. In practice most people will get by without installing an additional player.

The QN900F performs really well – as befits a premium television. The bass is quite strong, but slightly muted. We wouldn't compare it to top audio systems, but for built-in speakers, it does the job. The high tones are also a plus – quite clear and distinct, which is particularly useful when watching films with a lot of dialogue. Unfortunately, Samsung still does not support the DTS:X format in its televisions. This means that if we want to hear sound recorded in this standard, we need to connect an external home cinema through an amplifier – the television simply won't play it on its own.

Unlike the higher C7L, C8L or X11L series, the RM7L does not feature an audio system branded by Bang & Olufsen. TCL has opted here for an Onkyo speaker array supported by "Ultra Bass" technology. The difference is also visible in the build. Instead of metal covers, simpler plastic grilles have been used. Does that affect sound quality? In our view, not as much as you might think. The RM7L simply sounds good, with a slightly different character to the C7L. Dialogue is clean and clear, and the TV can easily fill a larger living room. The amount of low end is also a plus. For a TV in this class there is quite a bit of bass and it does not come across as completely flat. Our measurements confirm this. Maximum volume reaches around 88 dB, which is a very good result, and the frequency response remains relatively even. Only above roughly 7-8 kHz is there a more noticeable drop in efficiency, so the highest frequencies are no longer as well exposed. That said, for a TV of this class the RM7L offers a surprisingly pleasant sound and most users will have no cause for complaint.
