The Philips PUS8209 is a model that stands out primarily for its unique Ambilight system. The three-sided wall lighting behind the television dynamically adjusts to the picture, adding an extraordinary atmosphere when watching films or playing games. This solution, for which Philips is renowned, makes a difference and could be a great choice for those looking for something more unconventional in everyday use. In terms of picture quality, the television performs quite well, especially in this price range. The VA panel provides solid contrast and decent blacks, which works particularly well in the evening in dimly lit rooms. Watching films in such conditions is genuinely enjoyable, although the screen brightness (280 nits) leaves much to be desired – in bright rooms, the image can appear washed out, and HDR content does not make a significant impression. When it comes to gaming, the PUS8209 also has some advantages. Support for VRR, ALLM, and a low input lag of 13 ms ensures that gameplay is smooth and responsive. Of course, this is not equipment for advanced gamers, but for those who occasionally pick up a controller, it should suffice. The biggest downside is the Titan OS operating system. Many popular applications are lacking, and the interface does not always function as smoothly as one would wish. The remote control, which requires aiming at the television, can be irritating, especially in situations where quick operation is expected. In summary: the Philips PUS8209 is a television that will perform well for basic applications. Ambilight adds uniqueness and enhances the atmosphere during viewing. In everyday use or occasional gaming, it manages, but its limitations – particularly in screen brightness and operating system – may be problematic for more demanding users. If one is looking for simple equipment with an unusual visual addition, this model is worth considering.

The LG MRGB85 is a television that is best suited to gamers and users who are attached to webOS. In that respect it is hard to fault. It offers plenty of benefits for gamers thanks to a very high panel refresh rate. Add to that the smoothly operating webOS, which stands out above all for the convenient Magic Remote and a full set of features for traditional television. The problem begins when you look at the overall picture quality and compare it with the price the manufacturer is asking for this model. The MRGB85’s launch price is, to say the least, difficult to regard as attractive compared with competing models. For similar money you can find televisions offering much more advanced backlighting and, above all, better black level control. What causes the most controversy, however, is the naming and the way LG positions this model. True, the MRGB85 uses a tri-colour backlight, but it is edge-lit. It is therefore hard to call this a fully fledged RGB Mini-LED in the sense commonly used for TVs that employ a large number of independently controlled zones behind the panel. In practice the limitations of local dimming are very noticeable and they significantly harm the viewing experience in dark scenes. That does not mean the MRGB85 is a bad television. It handles everyday content well, offers decent colours, respectable brightness and a very wide feature set. Picture from a standard SDR source can look really good, and Dolby Vision partly helps to hide weaker brightness handling in HDR. However, it is hard to shake the impression that the biggest problem with this model is not the hardware itself but its price and its overly ambitious positioning in the market. If someone is looking mainly for a gaming TV, values the convenience of webOS and finds it on a large promotion, the MRGB85 can make sense. At its current price, however, it falls behind, because the competition today simply offers more in terms of picture quality.

The video accurately shows differences in contrast and black levels between TVs, as well as potential issues: halo around bright objects or Mini-LED zone operation visible as brightness jumps.

Philips PUS8209 pleasantly surprised us in terms of contrast, which is truly solid for its price range. Thanks to the use of a VA panel, a contrast level of 8000:1 has been achieved, which is considered an excellent result in this price category. In tests using scenes from the film Oblivion, the television performed well, providing visible light separation. Three independent light sources in the test scene were portrayed without significant issues. Similarly, in the case of the film Sicario 2, where the blacks, although not perfect, appear decent enough to allow for the distinction of details in the darker parts of the image. The lack of local dimming technology is noticeable, however, the manufacturer has implemented a "global dimming" function. This mechanism enables the television to automatically darken or brighten the entire screen depending on the content, which somewhat improves the perception of contrast. Philips PUS8209 offers solid contrast and decent results in tests. Although it lacks the precision of local dimming, its capabilities at this price are satisfactory and will meet the needs of most users.

LG MRGB85 uses a VA panel, so even without additional measures it offers better black levels than models based on IPS or ADS panels. In simpler scenes the image has decent depth and can look quite convincing. The biggest limitation appears, however, when local dimming is enabled. The TV uses an edge-lit backlight positioned at the bottom of the screen. As a result it cannot precisely control the brightness of small parts of the picture. When a single bright element appears on a dark background, an entire vertical band often lights up. This is accompanied by a distinct halo, and even more noticeable is the backlight's behaviour itself. When scenes change, brightness can jump up and down sharply, causing the image to noticeably pulse in a dark room. Local dimming can be turned off completely in the TV menu. Contrast then drops noticeably, but the image becomes much more stable and the frequent flicker of the backlight disappears. In practice some users may therefore willingly give up deeper blacks in favour of a calmer, more predictable picture.

Unfortunately, this is where the problems begin. A maximum brightness of 280 nits is definitely too low to feel the true effect of HDR. In practice, the image resembles standard SDR more, so it’s hard to speak of deeper visual experiences. On the positive side, the colour gamut coverage is commendable – 91.4% DCI-P3 is a score that will be sufficient for most films. It must also be said that the image is stable and there are no issues with sudden changes in brightness or colours. Overall, HDR on this television is more of a formality than an actual added value. If we are looking for genuine HDR thrills, this model may not meet expectations.

LG MRGB85 offers moderate brightness. On test patterns it reaches about 700 nits, which by itself is a decent result. In actual movie scenes the values are lower and most often fall between 400 and 600 nits. Bright, expansive shots perform best. In scenes with a lot of black the TV noticeably limits luminance, trying to maintain the highest possible contrast. The HDR effect is therefore visible, but it is far from the level offered by more advanced Mini-LED designs. Especially in darker parts of films the limitations of edge-lit backlighting and imprecise local dimming become noticeable again.

HDR Colors

A much stronger suit of the MRGB85 is its colors. The TV covers about 95% of the DCI-P3 color space and 74% of BT.2020, allowing HDR material to look vivid and striking. Colors are well saturated, and the difference compared with basic LCD TVs is clearly visible. It is worth noting, however, that this is not a classic RGB backlight, where each of the three primary colors is generated by a separate diode. Red is produced by a PFS phosphor, which expands the palette and yields more saturated red shades. This solution works well for color reproduction, but it does not change the limitations of dimming itself. The LEDs are not driven independently in the way the series name might suggest... so it turns out that Mini RGB is not the same as Mini-LED RGB!

Philips PUS8209 offers many picture modes, but the best of them, without a doubt, is the Filmmaker mode. Despite its proud name, it has its clear problems. In the case of HD content, the white balance is characterised by a strong dominance of red, which causes the picture to be significantly warmer than it should be in reality. The brightness characteristic (gamma), although correct in the mid-tones, has serious issues at the beginning and end of the curve. Drops in the shadows cause a loss of detail in the dark areas, and blowouts in the bright areas make some elements look unnatural.

For high-quality 4K HDR content, the situation reverses. In this case, blue dominates, leading to an artificial enhancement effect, reminiscent of unnatural retail settings. Such an image looks unattractive and inconsistent with the creators' intentions. An additional problem is the EOTF curve, responsible for brightness in HDR materials. It deviates significantly from the reference chart, causing the image to appear too dark, robbing the depth and detail of HDR content.

Against this backdrop, errors in the Color Checker test and deviations in colour palette reproduction are exceptionally large, which further negatively impacts the overall image quality. The Filmmaker mode, although the best among the available options, requires substantial corrections to fully convey the director's vision.

We tested the TV in Filmmaker Mode, because among the available settings it offered the image closest to the reference. However, the out-of-the-box colour reproduction was not perfect. The largest deviations concerned the white balance, with the image showing too much red and not enough blue, which caused the whole picture to shift noticeably towards warmer tones. Whites took on a slightly yellowish tint, and skin tones and bright parts of the image did not always look natural. It was not a fault that completely ruined the viewing experience, but in direct comparison with the same screen after calibration the difference was readily apparent.

After calibration, the white balance for HD and 4K content has significantly improved. Although we have not achieved a perfectly flat characteristic, the effect is definitely better than before. The picture on the television no longer appears artificially warm or excessively cold, which significantly enhances the naturalness of the displayed content. The brightness characteristic (gamma) has also been adjusted – the biggest issues at the beginning and end of the graph have been mitigated. The EOTF curve, responsible for brightness in 4K HDR material, has been stabilised, eliminating problems with excessive dimming of the image. In the colour palette test, some imperfections can still be noticed due to average coverage of the wide colour gamut, which is a limitation of the equipment itself. Nevertheless, the final effect is clearly better than before calibration – the image looks more natural and approaches the expectations of the Filmmaker mode.

Calibration primarily allowed us to correct the white balance and remove the previously noticeable warm tint. After adjustment the whites stopped leaning towards a yellow cast and the colours became more neutral and natural. The biggest improvement was seen in SDR material, where the picture looked even and much closer to reference. A similar effect was achieved in HDR. After calibration the image became more organised, although not all of the TV's limitations could be eliminated. The greatest reservations still concerned intense reds, which were not always reproduced with sufficient precision. In practice the MRGB85 handles everyday SDR content very well, whereas in more demanding HDR material its limitations remain clearly visible.

The Philips PUS8209 presents a decent gradient in bright scenes, where tonal transitions are smooth enough not to be noticeable. Unfortunately, in darker scenes, such as red water, the television clearly struggles. Issues with blending shades and a lack of precision in reproducing subtle colour differences are very apparent here.

LG MRGB85 handles tonal transitions quite well. In bright scenes posterization is least noticeable and the TV has no problem separating individual shades. Tonal transitions fare somewhat worse in dark scenes, where posterization, in the most demanding moments transitioning into dark shades of grey, can be more noticeable. However, this is rather typical for most TVs. It is worth adding that similar behaviour can be observed in Dolby Vision mode, where posterization on the MRGB85 is slightly worse than usual.

The television offers a "Distortion Reduction" feature that effectively improves the gradation of tonal transitions, especially when set to the minimum level. Unfortunately, this comes at a cost – the feature simultaneously smooths out details such as the texture of materials. On the positive side, it is worth noting that the operation of this option does not negatively affect film grain, which remains intact.

As for image scaling (upscaling), the television generates a plastic, soft image that generally looks pleasant. However, in the background, one can sometimes notice issues with aliasing on certain elements, such as branches or fine details, which can lower the quality of reception. Despite these minor imperfections, the overall experience of scaling is satisfactory.

Upscaling and digital image processing perform quite well on the LG MRGB85. The Alpha 8 AI 4K Gen7 processor efficiently upscales lower-resolution content, and regardless of source you can also easily disable overscan. The TV also copes well with compression artefacts. The "Smooth Gradation" feature can effectively reduce visible banding and tonal unevenness, but it is not always precise. At higher settings it can also smooth out fine details, for example surface textures. On the plus side, it does not remove film grain. It's safest to use the "Low" or "Medium" setting, which gives the best compromise between artefact reduction and preserving detail.

The 60 Hz panel in the Philips PUS8209 is mainly suitable for watching films, but there is still a sense of something missing. The television does not offer any motion smoother that would allow users to adjust the fluidity of the picture to their individual preferences, which can be disappointing for some users.

The LG MRGB85 is equipped with a VA panel with a native 144 Hz refresh rate, so it performs very well in terms of motion handling. The TV easily handles 120 Hz content from consoles and higher refresh rates when connected to a PC. That matters not only for gaming but also when watching sport, where camera movement is noticeably smoother than on basic models with 60 Hz panels. We also have TruMotion, which lets you set the level of motion smoothing yourself. You can keep a more cinematic feel to motion or increase smoothness, which works well for sports broadcasts and TV programmes. The adjustment range is wide, so you can easily tailor the smoothing to your own preferences.

The Philips PUS8209 offers basic features useful for gamers, such as variable refresh rate (VRR), automatic low latency mode (ALLM), and a Game Bar that makes managing settings easier.

Unfortunately, due to the 60 Hz panel, the television will not meet the expectations of more demanding gamers who are counting on higher smoothness and image precision. Additionally, this model does not support any HDR mode dedicated to gaming, such as HGiG or Dolby Vision, which further limits its capabilities in this regard.

When it comes to gaming, the LG MRGB85 performs by far the best. The manufacturer didn't skimp on features and has essentially brought the full suite of functions from pricier TVs to this model. You get three HDMI 2.1 ports with the full 48 Gbit/s bandwidth. Each supports 4K at 120 Hz from a console, and when connected to a PC also 4K at 144 Hz. So you don't need to worry which port to plug your console or PC into, because they all offer the same capabilities. Also on board are VRR, AMD FreeSync Premium, NVIDIA G-Sync Compatible, ALLM and HGiG. There's also Dolby Vision Gaming, which means in supported games you can use high refresh rates and dynamic HDR simultaneously on Xbox. The package is rounded off by Game Optimizer, a handy in-game menu for gamers. Without leaving the game you can change the picture profile, brighten shadow details or check the current frame rate. In terms of gaming features, the MRGB85 therefore offers almost the same as much more expensive LG models.

The input lag in the Philips PUS8209 is one of its strongest points. With a value of around 13 ms, the television provides a very quick response time, which should please most gamers, both casual and more advanced. This result allows for comfortable gameplay even in dynamic games.

Input lag in the LG MRGB85 is really low. Our measured value was around 10 ms with a 120 Hz signal and about 20 ms at 60 Hz. Importantly, we obtained similar results in Dolby Vision mode as well. They may not be the absolute best figures on the market, but in practice they are more than enough for comfortable, smooth gameplay. The delay is not noticeable and should not be a problem even in fast-paced action games or online titles.

On paper, cooperation with a PC seems promising, especially thanks to support for chroma 4:4:4, which should ensure good font readability and detail reproduction. In practice, however, the television has significant issues with displaying text, particularly on dark backgrounds, where the so-called pixelation is clearly visible, negatively affecting work comfort.

Additionally, the lack of support for technologies such as G-Sync means that the smoothness of gameplay when connected to a PC leaves much to be desired, making this model less attractive for users looking for a television for gaming on a computer.

MRGB85 works very well with PCs. Support for 4K at 144 Hz and compatibility with G-Sync Compatible and FreeSync Premium mean it's not just a gaming screen but also a perfectly capable monitor for work. In terms of text readability, it's simply good. The TV properly supports 4:4:4 chroma, so small fonts and system elements remain sharp. Only when viewed from very close can you spot minor artefacts on the edges of letters, but at a normal distance from a 55" screen or larger it makes no difference at all.

The viewing angles on the Philips PUS8209 are poor, which is typical for a VA panel. When viewing at an angle, the brightness of the image drops significantly, and the colours lose their depth, which can greatly affect viewing comfort, especially in larger groups or in an unusual setting of the television in relation to the viewer.

Viewing angles on the LG MRGB85 are mediocre. Because it uses a VA panel the image loses colour saturation quite quickly, even when viewed from a slight angle. This is a typical trait of this type of panel — in return for high contrast you get poorer viewing angles. IPS panels work the opposite way: they offer lower contrast but retain colours better when the screen is viewed from the side. In theory the MRGB85 belongs to the family of RGB TVs, which can have better viewing angles than models that use additional QLED filters. Here, however, that does not provide much advantage. The modest number of zones located at the edge of the screen and the way they operate mean that, when viewed from an angle, the image quickly loses quality much like on ordinary LCD panels.

The Philips PUS8209 is equipped with a satin matrix coating, which only moderately reduces reflections, which may be insufficient in brightly lit rooms. However, the biggest problem is the low brightness level of 280 nits. In practice, this means that watching content during the day, especially in strong sunlight, can be a challenge, as the picture appears too dark to ensure comfortable use.

LG MRGB85 copes quite well in a bright room. Its average brightness reaches around 500 nits, noticeably above average. That means in a moderately sunlit living room the picture remains clear and doesn’t look dim. The screen coating is less effective and only average at reducing reflections. Direct reflections from windows or lamps can be clearly visible, so it’s best not to place the TV directly opposite large windows or strong light sources.

The Philips PUS8209 uses the Titan OS operating system, which, while simple to use, remains limited in terms of functionality. The number of available applications is small compared to more developed ecosystems such as Google TV, which can be disappointing for users accustomed to broader capabilities. Additionally, the lack of support for AirPlay restricts compatibility with Apple devices, reducing the flexibility of the television for content streaming. Although the remote control is interesting, it requires aiming at the screen, which may not appeal to everyone.

The absence of more advanced features, such as PiP (Picture-in-Picture) or programme recording, further limits the device's capabilities in everyday use.

The Philips PUS8209 is a television that draws attention with its interesting solution in the form of a three-sided Ambilight system, which is a dynamic backlighting of the wall behind the television that adapts its colours and intensity to the content displayed on the screen. This effect creates an impression of greater depth of image and enhances immersion, especially in dimly lit rooms. Unfortunately, its potential is limited by the Titan OS operating system, which leaves much to be desired. The limited number of applications and lack of support for popular features such as AirPlay can be a significant drawback for more demanding users. Although Ambilight distinguishes this model from the competition, shortcomings in the operating system greatly affect the overall functionality of the television.

The LG MRGB85 runs webOS, which is fast, clear and provides access to all the major streaming apps. The menu is smooth and navigating it is straightforward. The TV also performs well with conventional broadcast TV. You’ll find features such as Time Shift, HbbTV and a convenient programme guide. The MRGB85 is therefore suitable both for using Netflix or YouTube and for everyday TV viewing.

Control is handled by a newer version of the Magic Remote. Compared with older models it has been noticeably slimmed down and no longer has a conventional numeric keypad, but it fits better in the hand and is more comfortable for daily use. It still retains the distinctive gyroscope, which lets you control the on-screen cursor by moving your hand. Combined with webOS, this works very well.

The built-in media player in the Philips PUS8209 performs well in everyday use. It handles Polish characters in subtitles without any issues and allows for the adjustment of colour and font size, which significantly enhances the comfort of using this feature. More demanding users may notice some shortcomings in the supported file formats; however, for most applications in daily use, this player should be completely sufficient.

The built-in media player handles most common video, music and photo formats, so for everyday use you shouldn't be missing anything. The only unusual issue occurred with HEIC files. The TV correctly displayed their thumbnails, but when opened it couldn't show the image at full resolution. Aside from that, the player worked without any major issues.

The sound in the Philips PUS8209 can be described as average, typical for televisions in this price range. The speakers with a power of 2x10 W do not offer exceptional quality or depth; however, they are sufficient for everyday television viewing. On the positive side, it is worth noting the wide range of supported audio codecs, such as Dolby Atmos and DTS, which can significantly enhance audio quality when combined with external sound systems, such as soundbars or home cinema sets.

The sound in the LG MRGB85 is simply adequate and there’s not much more to say about it. The 2.0 system used here, with a total power of 20 W, performs like most TVs on the market. It lacks pronounced bass and a wider soundstage, although it must be admitted it can get fairly loud. For everyday TV viewing this setup will do. However, those who want fuller, more impressive sound should consider purchasing a soundbar or a home cinema system.
