Our verdict

Philips PML 9009 is the manufacturer's top LCD television, using Mini LED backlighting. The device itself boasts excellent build quality, a stylish remote control, and the manufacturer's exclusive multicoloured Ambilight backlighting. In terms of picture quality, a slight drawback can be noted with the blacks and contrast, which, to be frank, are not among the best and will not deliver as deep and vibrant an image as is found in televisions in a similar price range. However, it is worth noting that due to good algorithms responsible for the picture, its tonal quality was very satisfying. Therefore, the relatively low brightness of the display is well masked here, and with the implementation of Dolby Vision technology, it allows for access to HDR materials. What definitely deserves attention is the fluidity of transitions, which were quite outstanding and better than in some significantly more expensive units. The greatest advantage of this television is its performance in gaming. No negative remarks can be made in this aspect, as the television truly shines and will certainly satisfy any user. The motion smoothing system is also one of the aspects worth praising the television for. With two sliders, whose effects are perceptible at every position, each user can find the best level of smoothing for themselves. Therefore, it can confidently be said that when choosing a television for sports, PML9009 Philips can be identified as an excellent candidate. Although the TitanOS operating system is currently in the development phase and lacks a considerable number of applications, we do not believe that the manufacturer will do nothing in this regard.

The Philips MLED920 is a natural continuation of last year's model PML9000, but it is not a repetition of the past. It is clear that the manufacturer has done their homework – primarily, the local dimming algorithms have been improved, which last year could significantly ruin the viewing experience. Now, blacks and contrast look much better, and with Dolby Vision present here, even HDR content appears quite decent. The picture can sometimes shine where it should, without straining the eyes during difficult scenes. Undoubtedly, the biggest asset of the MLED920 is its unique Ambilight system. The three-sided backlighting can give films and games a completely new atmosphere – the screen seems to extend beyond its borders, and the entire room becomes part of the viewing experience. This is something that not only cinema enthusiasts will appreciate but also gamers, who, alongside the lights, receive a full set of features typical for modern gaming TVs: 144 Hz, VRR, ALLM, and Dolby Vision Gaming. In this regard, Philips has a lot to offer. However. Indeed, there is a significant however – here we reach the most difficult part of this verdict – it is still a dual-purpose device. On one hand, we have a strong picture and a unique Ambilight feature, while on the other, there are hardware limitations that are hard to ignore. Titan OS in its current form is a considerable hindrance, full of bugs and deficiencies, which cause the television to lag behind the competition. On top of that, the price is not low at all given the offered capabilities. Therefore, it is difficult to recommend it unambiguously to everyone. However, if you are looking for the brightest Philips screen at a reasonable price, with Ambilight, a full set of gamer features, and basic applications – the MLED920 will be quite a suitable choice.

The video accurately shows differences in contrast and black levels between TVs, as well as potential issues: halo around bright objects or Mini-LED zone operation visible as brightness jumps.

Philips PML9009 is equipped with a high-contrast VA panel. Although it does not deliver as deep and three-dimensional an image as OLED televisions, it is still a much better solution for home cinema compared to IPS/ADS panels. The measured static contrast (without local dimming activated), which stands at 6000:1, can be considered very good and allows for the full potential of the Mini LED backlighting that has been implemented in the tested television. The results of the contrast and black measurements, as you can see for yourselves, are not among the highest, and the only scene where the television demonstrated satisfactory results was that from the film "Oblivion," where the unit can be commended for its light separation, which is not so obvious even in much more expensive units. We should also mention that all tests were conducted at medium dimming power, as the lowest option produced unsatisfactory black levels, while the highest lost a significant amount of detail. Unfortunately, our standard testing procedure with the film "Sicario 2" did not go very well. Yes, all the details in the background are very well visible, but due to the operation of the dimming zones, the overall tone was significantly thrown off, not to mention the strong halo effect around the bright elements of the helicopter.

The Philips MLED920 in the 55-inch version that we had the opportunity to test features a VA panel with high contrast. The panel itself is one thing, but the true distinguishing feature of this model is the mini-LED backlighting. This largely determines how black levels and contrast appear – and it must be said that Philips has made a significant leap forward compared to the models from 2024, where the local dimming algorithms were simply mediocre. The new version is much improved, and the contrast presented by the MLED920 can truly surprise positively. At times, it resembles the level known from the best LCD televisions on the market – blacks can be deep, the picture gains a sense of three-dimensionality, and watching films in a dark room makes a great impression. Of course, as with any mini-LED television, this is not a picture completely free of compromises. With a large amount of fine details on the screen, local dimming algorithms can sometimes get confused – at times dimming details more than we would like, and at other times brightening the background, resulting in slight, light blue halos around objects (the so-called halo effect). Despite these imperfections, we must emphasise that black levels and contrast are truly a strong point of the Philips MLED920 and definitely one of the reasons why it should be considered in the mid-range category.

Philips PML9009 does not really operate at the highest values in HDR content. Most effects with brightness at around 550 nits will not leave us thrilled with the lighting effects, although they are quite stable, which is a plus and will make a considerable difference compared to SDR content. It is worth noting that we can only achieve a good result in one scenario, namely in the film "Gemini", where the flashlight as the only light source can shine. Why in that scene specifically? The answer is quite simple. The scene itself does not contain a large amount of black, and the flashlight is not as large an object as the sun in the first and last scenes. Overall, the brightness measurement results in HDR content do not provide a basis for recommending this television for viewing productions that utilise a wide colour spectrum. Although it is worth noting that this model can cover it to a decent extent of 93% in the case of the DCI-P3 palette.

Philips MLED920 in our measurements in static tests even reached around 900 nits, which is really a solid result for a mid-range model. In practice, this translates to a lot of satisfaction during viewing sessions – in scenes rich in bright light, such as the first, third or fifth test slide, the screen managed to generate about 700 nits, which is sufficient to feel the true "HDR effect." However, it cannot be denied that the limited number of dimming zones and the compromises typical of mini-LEDs in more demanding scenes reveal their nature. In sequences with small light sources – like the moon or a scene from the film Sicario 2 – the television clearly prioritises maintaining deeper blacks at the expense of the brightness of these small elements. For most viewers, this is still a reasonable compromise, as the dark background looks significantly better, though it is important to be aware that the details themselves may not impress with their intensity. There is also a certain sense of dissatisfaction regarding the colours. Although the applied PFS filter (the equivalent of quantum dots known from QLEDs) does its job and the colours appear quite vivid, the coverage of the DCI-P3 palette reaches “only” 90%. In everyday viewing, this will be sufficient, but in extremely colourful productions – like the latest Disney animations – one can notice that some tones are not as vibrant as they could be in other setups.

The best factory mode used during our tests was "Filmmaker". Here, we will look at both SDR and HDR content. The element that distinguishes them is primarily the EOTF curve in materials with a wide colour gamut and the gamma in those recorded "the old way". Starting with SDR films and series and the most basic thing we can observe, which is white balance, we see a significant dominance of red colour. This led to a yellow tint across the entire image, causing unnaturally looking faces and yellowed whites. This flaw is also evident on the "ColourChecker" palette, where all colours have shifted towards their warmer counterparts. Looking at a more significant graph, that of the gamma responsible for image contrast, we see considerable errors starting from the very beginning. From the left, the value we measured, marked by a connected ellipsis, clearly spiked upwards, causing complete merging of details in the darkest scenes. This state of affairs remained until 10% screen brightness, after which it dipped below the reference orange line, leading to a deterioration in contrast, which, as we know, the Philips PML9009 already lacks. In HDR materials, the white balance issues were very similar to those in SDR content. The discrepancy arises when checking the EOTF curve, which controls the rate of brightness increase and severely limited it, causing the image to appear unnaturally dark. As for the colours themselves, there were more reasons for concern here, as the television's too low luminance caused a huge discrepancy between the actual state and the correct one, which is perfectly visible on the error graph, often exceeding the scale.

Like every Philips television we tested, we primarily assessed the MLED920 in Filmmaker mode – this is meant to be the "most honest" mode, designed for films and to faithfully convey the intentions of the creators. Indeed, in terms of colour reproduction, it performs the best among all the modes available on the television, but it is not without flaws. The first thing that catches the eye is the white balance. The image has a slight tendency towards purple-pink tones, which gives it a somewhat unnatural character. An even bigger problem, however, turned out to be what we mentioned earlier – image blooming. Just looking at the gamma or EOTF charts reveals that the line significantly deviates from the norm, dropping below a value of 1.8. In practice, this means "bleeding" of the brightest whites, where the image becomes almost milky. Fortunately, most of these issues can be corrected – the MLED920 responds well to calibration, and with a few adjustments, one can significantly improve the viewing experience.

Philips PML9009, like most leading manufacturers, has been offering advanced tools for the calibration process for years. Thus, we find 2- and 20-point greyscale adjustment as well as an advanced CMS (Colour Management System). The differences resulting from calibration are evident, and even someone not paying attention to picture quality (although there probably aren't many such here) will notice a positive difference. Both SDR and HDR materials have undergone a significant transformation. The former, as well as the latter, have primarily rid themselves of the unpleasant yellow tint resulting from a red colour dominance in white balance. As for the SDR materials and gamma, although it is not 'lined up' perfectly and still loses dark details, the rest of it is on a more than decent level, and minor errors will not be noticeable. The colours themselves look infinitely better, and thanks to low deltaE errors, they are nearly reference-quality. On the other hand, the HDR materials, due to the low luminance of the unit, were not blended as we would have liked. Although the white balance has been largely normalised, here and there one can notice a slight blue tint. Fortunately, the EOTF curve turned out to be much more accessible and allowed for practically ideal geometry. Unfortunately, due to the screen's insufficient brightness, colour errors are still quite high.

After calibration, we managed to largely tame the white balance – to the extent that the average viewer will not be able to detect distortions in colours. The characteristic pink-purple haze that previously disrupted the naturalness of the image has also disappeared. The colour palette has been organised, and the colours appear more coherent and neutral. The gamma in SDR content post-calibration looks really good – there is no longer any mention of the previous 'bleeding' effect in bright scenes. The image has become more contrasty and devoid of that milkiness which had previously greatly harmed the viewing experience. In the case of HDR content, the improvement is also noticeable, although here it is still evident that the television is going 'its own way'. The EOTF curve cannot be fully shaped, as Philips simply does not offer the tools to allow precise control over this parameter in its settings. In many films, the television still exposes the image 'in its own way'. Despite these limitations, the calibration has delivered quite a bit of good – most of the colour distortions have been minimised, and the overall balance of the image has significantly improved. However, it must be noted that certain barriers stem from the very design of the hardware and simply cannot be overcome.

Undoubtedly, many of you have watched a film or series in which there were bands that should have been a smooth transition between colours. Therefore, during our tests, we also pay attention to tonal transitions. Philips PML9009 handled this matter quite correctly with each of the scenes we prepared, and although there are signs here and there of elements that could have been processed better, it is still good. It is particularly worth noting the one from "The Green Knight", which is definitely the most challenging. For the tested television, it did not prove to be a "killer" and there are no significant undesirable stutters visible in it.

The fluidity of tonal transitions in the Philips MLED920 is not its strongest point. In our tests, we quickly noticed that the television has noticeable issues in darker scenes – examples include segments from the film The Green Knight or test grey palettes. There, the characteristic banding of colours and too sharp transitions between shades can be quite evident, particularly in productions that maintain a darker aesthetic. Fortunately, the situation is better in brighter scenes – there, the image appears smooth and without significant artefacts.

Judging by how PML9009 Philips handled tonal transitions, the image scaling test should perform equally well. This time we are examining the television's algorithms responsible for enhancing the quality of images that have been recorded in lower quality. Such images can be found in various television programmes or older films. In this regard, Philips PML9009 performs quite mediocrely and significantly blurs the image. This is particularly evident in fine branches or the model's hair.

We will take another look at the tonal transitions, which performed remarkably. Within the unit, we find several levels of smoothing. Even the lowest setting can effectively eliminate any non-fluid tonal transition and will work well with the vast majority of content. More importantly, none of the settings for this function softens the effect of film grain, which is extremely important in terms of alignment with the director's vision. However, we note that sometimes it may turn out that fine details will be blurred.

The manufacturer has equipped this model with several features that improve signal quality, and although we usually approach such "enhancements" with caution, here they prove to be really helpful. The key option is called "distortion reduction" – it works best at a medium level, as on one hand it effectively smooths out unwanted stair-stepping and colour banding, while on the other it does not excessively cut out details, allowing the image to still look natural.

Things are a bit worse with upscaling. Lower quality materials – such as the test video with the model – appeared soft and lacking in sharpness. Indeed, it can be partially corrected with the sharpness slider in the menu, but the effect remains far from what competitors in a similar price range offer. Philips therefore still needs to work on this element, as compared to the successful improvement of tonal transitions, the upscaling simply falls short.

Philips PML9009 is equipped with a panel that has a native refresh rate of 120 Hz. This is the essential minimum for watching all kinds of sports and is recommended for comfortable gaming in favourite titles on consoles or PCs. The manufacturer has prepared an effective system for improving the sharpness of moving images for those who do not like the characteristic stuttering of footage recorded at 24 fps or require a high level of motion fluidity, for example, when watching football matches. In the dedicated tab, we find the "Fluidity" slider, which helps eliminate stuttering, and "Motion Blur Reduction," which aids in increasing the sharpness of dynamic elements. This function works very well and granularly, meaning each setting has a real impact on the perception of motion. With such a set, every user will find their sweet spot. In the picture, we present our choice, which is a slight fluidity enhancement without the soap opera effect.

A matter directly related to motion is the pixel response time of the panel itself. The best in this regard are, of course, OLED panels, followed by IPS and ADS-based units, and finally, VA. Despite the overall good quality of the systems responsible for smoothing the image, the use of a VA panel carries consequences in the form of a black halo behind fast-moving objects. While this will not occur frequently in the tested television, it will be visible here and there.

The Philips MLED920 features a 144 Hz panel, which immediately suggests that we shouldn't complain about motion smoothness. And indeed – the motion blur is relatively low for a VA panel, and although slight issues can sometimes be noticed on darker backgrounds, they are not something that would stand out to most people during regular viewing.

Another significant advantage is the presence of a motion smoother called “Motion Style.” It allows you to adjust the sensation of smoothness to your own preferences – if someone prefers a more “theatrical,” almost television-like image, they can increase the sliders, whereas if they prefer to maintain the natural “jumps” of cinematic frames, it’s enough to set lower values. This way, everyone can find their golden mean.

Philips PML9009, equipped with HDMI 2.1 ports at full bandwidth, supports all features dedicated to gamers. The most basic ones, such as VRR and ALLM, are a given, but G-Sync, FreeSync, and gaming in HDR Dolby Vision with low input lag are not. These features activate without any issues and during the tests conducted, they did not present any problems. Such preparation of the television is certainly a strong point and one can say that it is a unit dedicated to gamers. For more advanced users, we also mention that the PML9009 is equipped with an HGIG mode, which will be particularly felt by gamers, as there are still relatively few games supporting Dolby Vision. This mode primarily allows for the adjustment of HDR effects to the capabilities of the television on a special board, in order to avoid dimming or burning out the image.

The television additionally features a special menu - GameBar. This allows for editing the unit's settings "on the fly", without the need to exit the game. We will also find features such as enabling a crosshair or adjusting black levels for better visibility of opponents in shadows.

In a brief summary of this paragraph, the Philips PML9009 is a unit that will certainly capture the attention of gamers. Thanks to its versatility, it will allow playing any title in the highest quality without compromises. Especially since features such as VRR, ALLM, G-Sync, FreeSync, or gameplay in HDR Dolby Vision will enhance the immersion in the favourite title.

For gamers, the Philips MLED920 is truly a complete tool. The manufacturer has taken care of everything that is considered standard in televisions designed for consoles and PCs today. It features ALLM, so the console automatically switches the screen to game mode, alongside VRR and a refresh rate of 144 Hz, which guarantees smooth gameplay even in fast-paced titles. All key HDR formats are supported – including HGiG and Dolby Vision Gaming for Xbox – which means that regardless of what you are playing and on which console, the television will be able to extract the maximum potential from the image. The Game Bar also proves useful in daily gaming – a relatively simple implementation by Philips, but a functional panel where you can quickly check image parameters, enable VRR or adjust settings without leaving the game. It may not be as comprehensive as the competition, but it performs its task flawlessly. And finally, something that sets Philips apart from the competition – Ambilight. The results of input lag measurements in Philips PML9009 are at a high level, regardless of the signal or resolution. All gamers will surely appreciate the manufacturer's efforts, as a game running at 4K120Hz with HDR has only 8 ms of latency, which is virtually unnoticeable even in online games. It is also worth mentioning the proper implementation of the gaming mode with Dolby Vision, which can be praised for a similar response time at 16 ms.

The input lag on the Philips MLED920 is really very good – in 120 Hz mode, we measured values below 10 ms, which places this model among the absolute top tier of LCD televisions in terms of responsiveness. Even at 60 Hz, a result of around 18 ms is fully acceptable and will not interfere with any type of gameplay. A notable exception is the Dolby Vision mode at 60 frames, where the lag can increase to as much as 35 ms. This is a result that might be slightly jarring for esports players, but we must honestly admit – for most so-called "casual gamers", it will be absolutely imperceptible. Especially since we are talking about values that still allow for comfortable gaming without significant compromises.

The photo shows the legibility of small fonts. Ideally, lines should be the same thickness on both light and dark text, with minimal pixel gaps.

Just like in games, the tested Philips PML9009 performs excellently in daily tasks as well. Measured latency of 8 ms allows for virtually instantaneous response on the mouse-screen-eye line. The correct implementation of chroma 4:4:4 enables work with text without any issues thanks to sharp fonts. The subpixel arrangement of the matrix is BGR; however, this does not cause any discomfort when working on the Windows system. It may be different with other systems that might not be able to correctly convert the text.

When it comes to working with a PC, the Philips MLED920 evokes quite mixed feelings. On one hand, it looks impressive on paper – we have 144 Hz, G-Sync, and FreeSync support, so in terms of gaming on a PC, the television does not disappoint. Anyone looking for a large screen for computer gaming gets a solid package of features here. However, when we try to use it as a typical monitor for everyday work, its limitations quickly become apparent. The fonts do not present themselves well – there is noticeable strong dithering, coloured letters can be jagged, and in the case of very dark text, there are even strange anomalies, as if the panel is losing thin lines and struggling to reproduce them correctly. In short: Yes for PC gaming. For any work and reading text: a definite no.

The commonly known drawback of VA panels that do not have an angle coating is their poor viewing angles. This is no different this time. Even with a slight deviation from the axis, the image becomes washed out, and the colours undergo significant degradation.

The viewing angles in the MLED920 are classic for a VA panel – even a slight deviation from the centre causes the image to start losing colours, contrast diminishes, and the overall picture becomes quite flat and unappealing. There are no miracles here. So, if you're watching films with a larger group and everyone is sitting slightly off to the side, this will be somewhat noticeable. On the other hand, something for something: thanks to this panel, the MLED920 can display a much deeper black than televisions with IPS panels.

As far as the brightness of the television itself in SDR material is good (let's face it, we watch films in the evening or in the dark), the suppression of reflections is at a rather average level. This is due to the satin finish of the panel, which is quite susceptible to all light sources and neither absorbs nor disperses them. However, it is worth noting that thanks to the fairly high brightness in SDR material, the television performs fairly well in bright rooms overall, and certainly better than a large number of OLED televisions.

The Philips MLED920 performs quite well in everyday use. The applied satin coating on the panel effectively reduces reflections, and in most moderately sunlit living rooms, it handles unwanted glare adequately. However, it should be noted that this is not a television that dazzles with brightness – the average value in SDR hovers around 450 nits. In very bright rooms, especially with large south-facing windows, the screen does not always manage to cut through the intense daylight. In such situations, it is worth supporting it with at least light curtains, so that viewing comfort is not significantly compromised.

Before we move on to the software that controls the television, it is impossible not to mention the biggest distinguishing feature of the manufacturer's televisions. This is, of course, the multicoloured Ambilight backlighting, which is placed on the back of the device and displays colours tailored to what is happening on the screen, often allowing for an even greater sense of immersion. The operating system responsible for the television's functionality is Philips' proprietary system charmingly named TitanOs. It is definitely more closed and limited in terms of app resources compared to other televisions from the manufacturer that use the GoogleTV system. In addition to a lack of significant applications, its closed nature is also evident in another respect. We will not be able to perform such basic tasks as programming recordings or recording to USB. Those using Apple devices may also feel disappointed by the lack of AirPlay functionality, which allows for easy screen streaming. Fortunately, there is the option to connect a keyboard and mouse for easier navigation through the television menu. It's also worth mentioning that while the remote pairs via BT, it only works for voice selection in English. The rest operates via IR...

In summary: TitanOs has quite a few "buts," especially if we are aware users needing and using many streaming platforms. It is rather an option for those limiting themselves to the so-called holy trinity, which is Netflix, YouTube, and CDA.

Smart TV – Titan OS

Philips MLED920 uses the proprietary Titan OS, which is just starting its journey in the television market and unfortunately, this is evident at every turn. On one hand, we have basic functions – such as AirPlay support or the ability to mirror from a smartphone, but on the other hand, its limitations quickly become apparent. Screen mirroring only works with a phone, but not with a laptop. Voice search? Yes, but it is only supported by Amazon Alexa and only in the languages supported by this assistant. The system operates reasonably quickly, but from time to time it can "fail" and gives the impression of being something underdeveloped that is still evolving.

Classic TV Features

Titan OS also does not spoil users with classic television features. Apart from the hybrid remote control with a numeric keypad – which is indeed backlit and cleverly designed in two modes, it unfortunately works on infrared – there is nothing here that could truly distinguish the MLED920 from its competitors. There's a lack of USB recording or PiP functionality, and such features could be useful in this class. Among the unusual additions, however, there is an analogue output in the form of a jack that allows you to connect headphones or older speakers. It’s a small nod to users who still use older equipment.

Ambilight TV

What certainly draws attention away from the shortcomings of Titan OS is the unique, three-sided Ambilight system. Here Philips still plays in its own league and can impress those who have not encountered this addition before. The colourful backlighting that reacts to the content on the screen gives the viewing experience a unique atmosphere and is something that the competition does not offer in a similar form. It is the Ambilight that is supposed to make other issues – both system and functional – take a back seat.

The default media player built into Philips PML9009 offers quite a wide range of capabilities, but it also has its limitations. It plays practically all video formats, except for .asf, which is rather uncommon. However, the issues are the lack of the H.265 HEVC codec at high bitrate and support for .sub files, which are quite popular. When it comes to photos, the player performs adequately, but it lacks support for some common resolutions and formats, such as HEIC, which is used on Apple devices. The player performs best with audio, where it can be faulted in no way. Unfortunately, due to system limitations, there is no possibility to expand its functions, which means we are left with what the manufacturer has prepared.

The built-in player in the Philips MLED920 works quite well and manages most popular audio and video files without major issues – exactly as you can see in our test table. Therefore, there are no concerns about typical movie or music formats. We can only criticise its rather selective support for photo formats and some resolutions.

To begin with, it is worth noting that sound quality is a subjective matter. The built-in audio system in Philips PML9009 stands out for its clear treble, but the bass is rather flat and significantly worse than in competing models in the same price range.

The sound on the Philips MLED920 is unlikely to be the element that impresses you the most. It sounds rather flat, lacking depth and clearer bass, which means that films or concerts do not have that additional layer of immersion that a better audio system can provide. However, it must be acknowledged that the volume is at a really respectable level – the television can reach up to 88 decibels. A significant advantage of the MLED920 is not so much the sound quality itself, but the handling of audio formats. Philips has ensured compatibility with practically all the major standards, including Dolby Atmos, DTS, and Dolby TrueHD 7.1. As a result, if someone decides to connect an external soundbar or amplifier, they will encounter no limitations and will be able to enjoy the full cinema sound experience.
