Our verdict

Philips PML 9009 is the manufacturer's top LCD television, using Mini LED backlighting. The device itself boasts excellent build quality, a stylish remote control, and the manufacturer's exclusive multicoloured Ambilight backlighting. In terms of picture quality, a slight drawback can be noted with the blacks and contrast, which, to be frank, are not among the best and will not deliver as deep and vibrant an image as is found in televisions in a similar price range. However, it is worth noting that due to good algorithms responsible for the picture, its tonal quality was very satisfying. Therefore, the relatively low brightness of the display is well masked here, and with the implementation of Dolby Vision technology, it allows for access to HDR materials. What definitely deserves attention is the fluidity of transitions, which were quite outstanding and better than in some significantly more expensive units. The greatest advantage of this television is its performance in gaming. No negative remarks can be made in this aspect, as the television truly shines and will certainly satisfy any user. The motion smoothing system is also one of the aspects worth praising the television for. With two sliders, whose effects are perceptible at every position, each user can find the best level of smoothing for themselves. Therefore, it can confidently be said that when choosing a television for sports, PML9009 Philips can be identified as an excellent candidate. Although the TitanOS operating system is currently in the development phase and lacks a considerable number of applications, we do not believe that the manufacturer will do nothing in this regard.

When we look at the Hisense E7NQ PRO in everyday use, it is immediately apparent that this is a television designed with a broad range of viewers in mind. The picture, although not breathtaking at first glance, gains a lot after proper calibration. The colours appear more natural, and a brightness level of around 500 cd/m² makes it comfortable to watch in a sunlit living room. The wide viewing angles offered by the IPS panel are an additional plus – we no longer have to fight for the best spot on the sofa. Dolby Vision can enhance the overall experience, and in SDR mode, the television delivers a truly pleasant image. Sports and gaming fans will find even more reasons to be satisfied here. High refresh rates (144 Hz) guarantee smooth ball movements on the pitch, while low latency, VRR, ALLM, and compatibility with G-Sync and Dolby Vision in games cater to those who value responsiveness and immersive gaming experiences. Because of all this, the E7NQ PRO becomes an interesting proposition for computer gamers as well. The VIDAA system works quite well – there are plenty of applications, although it lacks music-specific ones like Spotify or Tidal. However, you can expect recording, AirPlay, mirroring, and decent cooperation with wireless devices. Yes, there are certain shortcomings and imperfections – especially regarding subtitle support from USB or perfect management of brightness and contrast, and the absence of HGIG may disappoint the most demanding gamers. When we gather all the impressions and experiences, the E7NQ PRO emerges as a device that will perform well in many situations. It has its advantages – such as wide viewing angles, pleasant images after calibration, numerous additional functions, and excellent motion fluidity in sports or games. At the same time, it is important to remember that this is not a television intended for those seeking perfect experiences for evening viewings in total darkness. In low lighting, the deficiencies in contrast and black levels become more pronounced, so we suggest that individuals who primarily plan evening screenings look for alternatives among competitors. Nevertheless, as a versatile solution for everyday use – from watching television in a bright living room to playing console and computer games – the E7NQ PRO performs really solidly.

Halo effect and black detail visibility:

Philips PML9009 is equipped with a high-contrast VA panel. Although it does not deliver as deep and three-dimensional an image as OLED televisions, it is still a much better solution for home cinema compared to IPS/ADS panels. The measured static contrast (without local dimming activated), which stands at 6000:1, can be considered very good and allows for the full potential of the Mini LED backlighting that has been implemented in the tested television. The results of the contrast and black measurements, as you can see for yourselves, are not among the highest, and the only scene where the television demonstrated satisfactory results was that from the film "Oblivion," where the unit can be commended for its light separation, which is not so obvious even in much more expensive units. We should also mention that all tests were conducted at medium dimming power, as the lowest option produced unsatisfactory black levels, while the highest lost a significant amount of detail. Unfortunately, our standard testing procedure with the film "Sicario 2" did not go very well. Yes, all the details in the background are very well visible, but due to the operation of the dimming zones, the overall tone was significantly thrown off, not to mention the strong halo effect around the bright elements of the helicopter.

The tested Hisense E7NQ PRO in the 65-inch version features an IPS panel, which unfortunately is not known for high contrast. As a result, black appears slightly 'washed out' and at times takes on a silvery hue, which is clearly visible in our pictures. The manufacturer tried to address this by equipping the television with local dimming functionality. Unfortunately, in this 65-inch model, we only have 32 zones available, which, while somewhat helpful, is definitely not enough to achieve impressively high results—especially since the panel itself is unable to deliver incredibly deep blacks.

During testing, we observed highly variable results. In optimal conditions, it managed to reach around 7800:1, which can be considered decent; however, in more challenging scenes, the contrast dropped to around 2000:1. Such values are at best average and simply do not befit a television in this price range. Ultimately, while local dimming somewhat salvages the situation, it lacks truly deep, inky blacks and contrast that would leave a greater impression on us.

Philips PML9009 does not really operate at the highest values in HDR content. Most effects with brightness at around 550 nits will not leave us thrilled with the lighting effects, although they are quite stable, which is a plus and will make a considerable difference compared to SDR content. It is worth noting that we can only achieve a good result in one scenario, namely in the film "Gemini", where the flashlight as the only light source can shine. Why in that scene specifically? The answer is quite simple. The scene itself does not contain a large amount of black, and the flashlight is not as large an object as the sun in the first and last scenes. Overall, the brightness measurement results in HDR content do not provide a basis for recommending this television for viewing productions that utilise a wide colour spectrum. Although it is worth noting that this model can cover it to a decent extent of 93% in the case of the DCI-P3 palette.

Based on the luminance chart, which indicates around 550 nits, it can be said that Hisense E7NQ PRO theoretically has the potential to somewhat "magically" enchant us with its image in HDR. While testing various scenes from films, we noticed that the television continually tries to balance maintaining appropriate brightness with preserving the deepest blacks possible. In favourable conditions – for instance, during a scene from “The Meg,” where the screen is flooded with bright light – this brightness can indeed impress us. In such moments, we feel that HDR actually adds that "something" to the image. Unfortunately, when more challenging shots appear on the screen with small, bright elements on a dark background, the situation looks significantly worse. The brightness then drops to 200-300 nits, which is decidedly too little to truly distinguish HDR from standard SDR.

It is clear that the television tries, but hardware limitations – mainly the limited number of local dimming zones – prevent it from fully spreading its wings. The final effect is therefore often quite uneven and just as mediocre as in the contrast tests. However, it deserves credit for its impressive coverage of the DCI-P3 colour gamut at 97%. Thanks to this, the television can display a truly wide range of colours, which, in suitable scenes, can give us at least a taste of the true HDR effect. It’s just a shame that the overall experience is not complemented by better control of brightness and contrast.

The best factory mode used during our tests was "Filmmaker". Here, we will look at both SDR and HDR content. The element that distinguishes them is primarily the EOTF curve in materials with a wide colour gamut and the gamma in those recorded "the old way". Starting with SDR films and series and the most basic thing we can observe, which is white balance, we see a significant dominance of red colour. This led to a yellow tint across the entire image, causing unnaturally looking faces and yellowed whites. This flaw is also evident on the "ColourChecker" palette, where all colours have shifted towards their warmer counterparts. Looking at a more significant graph, that of the gamma responsible for image contrast, we see considerable errors starting from the very beginning. From the left, the value we measured, marked by a connected ellipsis, clearly spiked upwards, causing complete merging of details in the darkest scenes. This state of affairs remained until 10% screen brightness, after which it dipped below the reference orange line, leading to a deterioration in contrast, which, as we know, the Philips PML9009 already lacks. In HDR materials, the white balance issues were very similar to those in SDR content. The discrepancy arises when checking the EOTF curve, which controls the rate of brightness increase and severely limited it, causing the image to appear unnaturally dark. As for the colours themselves, there were more reasons for concern here, as the television's too low luminance caused a huge discrepancy between the actual state and the correct one, which is perfectly visible on the error graph, often exceeding the scale.

When we took our copy of Hisense E7NQ PRO out of the box, we immediately began to check the available picture modes. Among them, the Filmmaker mode seemed the most promising, although it too was not without its flaws. With standard SDR content, we noticed a clear tendency for excessive red enhancement, which made the image unnaturally warm. This was particularly evident in the comparative photo attached below. Conversely, when we switched to HDR content, the situation went in the opposite direction. This time, blue was dominant, and red was scarce, resulting in a cool effect, at times almost "shop-like" — although not as drastic as in those modes that are actually intended for display in exhibitions. As a result, in our tests assessing colour reproduction, these disturbances in colour balance led to significant errors.

Additionally, the television had issues with reproducing brightness characteristics. At lower resolutions, it noticeably brightened the darkest elements of the image, and with HDR content, the brightness curve (eotf) simply wouldn't conform as it should. Initially, the television excessively darkened the smallest details, only to then overly brighten larger areas. Fortunately, the E7NQ PRO provides us with plenty of calibration tools, so knowing that there is potential within it, we decided to take matters into our own hands and try to adjust it to eliminate these problems.

Philips PML9009, like most leading manufacturers, has been offering advanced tools for the calibration process for years. Thus, we find 2- and 20-point greyscale adjustment as well as an advanced CMS (Colour Management System). The differences resulting from calibration are evident, and even someone not paying attention to picture quality (although there probably aren't many such here) will notice a positive difference. Both SDR and HDR materials have undergone a significant transformation. The former, as well as the latter, have primarily rid themselves of the unpleasant yellow tint resulting from a red colour dominance in white balance. As for the SDR materials and gamma, although it is not 'lined up' perfectly and still loses dark details, the rest of it is on a more than decent level, and minor errors will not be noticeable. The colours themselves look infinitely better, and thanks to low deltaE errors, they are nearly reference-quality. On the other hand, the HDR materials, due to the low luminance of the unit, were not blended as we would have liked. Although the white balance has been largely normalised, here and there one can notice a slight blue tint. Fortunately, the EOTF curve turned out to be much more accessible and allowed for practically ideal geometry. Unfortunately, due to the screen's insufficient brightness, colour errors are still quite high.

Thanks to the tools available in E7NQ PRO, we managed to extract quite a decent image from it, especially with lower quality content. After refining the white balance of the SDR materials, the colours look much more natural, and what we see on the screen seems closer to the vision that the manufacturer intended to present. Additionally, we improved the brightness characteristic (Gamma), which means the television is no longer prone to excessive brightening, and everything presents itself distinctly better than before our intervention.

We also managed to achieve some results with HDR materials, although it isn’t quite as rosy here. Indeed, the white balance has approached an acceptable level, but the problem lies elsewhere. It concerns the EOTF curve, which is the way the television manages brightness and tonal range of the image. At first glance, it might seem that the biggest issue only relates to mid-tones being overly brightened. However, after more detailed testing and enabling the filters for displaying the EOTF curve, it becomes apparent that the receiver tends to brighten the entire screen. This appears to be a limitation arising from the small number of local dimming zones and generally modest brightness management capabilities. Such hardware limitations are simply insurmountable. Despite this, after our calibration, the image is noticeably better than at the outset. One just needs to be aware that in terms of contrast and brightness management, this model has its limits, which even good calibration cannot fully overcome.

Smoothness of tonal transitions

Undoubtedly, many of you have watched a film or series in which there were bands that should have been a smooth transition between colours. Therefore, during our tests, we also pay attention to tonal transitions. Philips PML9009 handled this matter quite correctly with each of the scenes we prepared, and although there are signs here and there of elements that could have been processed better, it is still good. It is particularly worth noting the one from "The Green Knight", which is definitely the most challenging. For the tested television, it did not prove to be a "killer" and there are no significant undesirable stutters visible in it.

We must honestly admit that the fluidity of tonal transitions in this television is among the best we have had the opportunity to test in 2024. Even in really demanding scenes, we hardly notice any distinct "steps" between colours. Of course, with a keen eye, one can detect minor flaws, but those are at a level that is virtually microscopic. You really need to have a very "alert" eye to catch them. This, in turn, means that while watching even the most complex shots in a full palette of colours, one can simply focus on the story and visual experiences without the irritating, artificial effect of posterisation.

Judging by how PML9009 Philips handled tonal transitions, the image scaling test should perform equally well. This time we are examining the television's algorithms responsible for enhancing the quality of images that have been recorded in lower quality. Such images can be found in various television programmes or older films. In this regard, Philips PML9009 performs quite mediocrely and significantly blurs the image. This is particularly evident in fine branches or the model's hair.

We will take another look at the tonal transitions, which performed remarkably. Within the unit, we find several levels of smoothing. Even the lowest setting can effectively eliminate any non-fluid tonal transition and will work well with the vast majority of content. More importantly, none of the settings for this function softens the effect of film grain, which is extremely important in terms of alignment with the director's vision. However, we note that sometimes it may turn out that fine details will be blurred.

When it comes to the function of smoothing tonal transitions in lower quality materials, the "smooth and gradient image" feature in Hisense E7NQ PRO unfortunately does not impress. At the lowest setting, the change is hard to notice at all – it is rather a cosmetic improvement. Switching to "Medium" mode yields a noticeable effect, but it is still nothing special, and in the process, the television begins to excessively interfere with other elements of the image, which can look unnatural.

Moreover, image scaling is rather average. On the test screen, where a portrait of a model and text are displayed, slight jagged edges are visible, making the overall appearance less smooth and aesthetically pleasing than one would expect in this class of device. It's simply difficult to talk about truly effective improvement in the quality of lower resolution.

Philips PML9009 is equipped with a panel that has a native refresh rate of 120 Hz. This is the essential minimum for watching all kinds of sports and is recommended for comfortable gaming in favourite titles on consoles or PCs. The manufacturer has prepared an effective system for improving the sharpness of moving images for those who do not like the characteristic stuttering of footage recorded at 24 fps or require a high level of motion fluidity, for example, when watching football matches. In the dedicated tab, we find the "Fluidity" slider, which helps eliminate stuttering, and "Motion Blur Reduction," which aids in increasing the sharpness of dynamic elements. This function works very well and granularly, meaning each setting has a real impact on the perception of motion. With such a set, every user will find their sweet spot. In the picture, we present our choice, which is a slight fluidity enhancement without the soap opera effect.

A matter directly related to motion is the pixel response time of the panel itself. The best in this regard are, of course, OLED panels, followed by IPS and ADS-based units, and finally, VA. Despite the overall good quality of the systems responsible for smoothing the image, the use of a VA panel carries consequences in the form of a black halo behind fast-moving objects. While this will not occur frequently in the tested television, it will be visible here and there.

Thanks to the use of a 144 Hz panel, E7NQ PRO performs excellently with nearly every type of content. Whether we are watching fast-paced matches, dynamic games or action films – the smoothness of motion leaves a good impression. When it comes to films, the manufacturer has equipped the television with two key tools: "motion blur reduction" and "judder reduction". Each of these functions can be adjusted on a scale from 1 to 10.

At lower values, the processing is subtle, barely noticeable, and gently smooths out motion without compromising the cinematic quality of the image. The higher we move up the scale, the more the television interferes with the presented material, smoothing out motion more intensely, and consequently – minimising any judders or micro-cuts. Conversely, the highest settings can resemble the so-called "soap opera effect", which makes the image appear excessively smooth, slightly losing its filmic atmosphere. However, with such a scale, we can find a happy medium, adjusting the smoothness of motion to our own preferences.

Philips PML9009, equipped with HDMI 2.1 ports at full bandwidth, supports all features dedicated to gamers. The most basic ones, such as VRR and ALLM, are a given, but G-Sync, FreeSync, and gaming in HDR Dolby Vision with low input lag are not. These features activate without any issues and during the tests conducted, they did not present any problems. Such preparation of the television is certainly a strong point and one can say that it is a unit dedicated to gamers. For more advanced users, we also mention that the PML9009 is equipped with an HGIG mode, which will be particularly felt by gamers, as there are still relatively few games supporting Dolby Vision. This mode primarily allows for the adjustment of HDR effects to the capabilities of the television on a special board, in order to avoid dimming or burning out the image.

The television additionally features a special menu - GameBar. This allows for editing the unit's settings "on the fly", without the need to exit the game. We will also find features such as enabling a crosshair or adjusting black levels for better visibility of opponents in shadows.

In a brief summary of this paragraph, the Philips PML9009 is a unit that will certainly capture the attention of gamers. Thanks to its versatility, it will allow playing any title in the highest quality without compromises. Especially since features such as VRR, ALLM, G-Sync, FreeSync, or gameplay in HDR Dolby Vision will enhance the immersion in the favourite title.

If we sometimes enjoy turning on the console and immersing ourselves in the world of games for long hours, E7NQ PRO can make quite an impressive impact. Thanks to the 144 Hz refresh rate, gameplay is surprisingly smooth, and support for HDMI 2.1 and VRR ensures that the picture doesn't 'tear' even during the most dynamic actions. Additionally, there's ALLM, which automatically sets the lowest latency as soon as we switch to the console – so we don't have to fiddle with the options ourselves.

A major plus is also the ability to run games in Dolby Vision, making colours and contrast simply look better. Hisense has also added a clear 'gamebar', allowing us to constantly monitor the most important parameters and change settings without leaving the game. The only thing we might regret a bit is the lack of HGIG support. While it may not be a crucial element, it could matter to some gamers aiming for the most faithful representation of the creators' vision. Nevertheless, in practice, the E7NQ PRO performs excellently and provides truly enjoyable gaming experiences.

The results of input lag measurements in Philips PML9009 are at a high level, regardless of the signal or resolution. All gamers will surely appreciate the manufacturer's efforts, as a game running at 4K120Hz with HDR has only 8 ms of latency, which is virtually unnoticeable even in online games. It is also worth mentioning the proper implementation of the gaming mode with Dolby Vision, which can be praised for a similar response time at 16 ms.

In this regard, Hisense E7NQ PRO really delivers. At a frequency of 60 Hz, we recorded around 15 ms, and at 120 Hz, the latency drops even to 6 ms, allowing for very quick response and smooth control in games. It is also worth mentioning that even in Dolby Vision mode, the input lag does not increase drastically. Just like in games, the tested Philips PML9009 performs excellently in daily tasks as well. Measured latency of 8 ms allows for virtually instantaneous response on the mouse-screen-eye line. The correct implementation of chroma 4:4:4 enables work with text without any issues thanks to sharp fonts. The subpixel arrangement of the matrix is BGR; however, this does not cause any discomfort when working on the Windows system. It may be different with other systems that might not be able to correctly convert the text.

By connecting the E7NQ PRO to a computer, we will have no reason to complain. The overall readability of the fonts is quite good, although with very thin, horizontal lines (the so-called “serifs” of letters) we noticed a slight dimming. This is not a major issue, but it's worth mentioning if we plan to spend long hours in text editors or browsers.

As for gaming on PC, the television shows its true colours. Support for G-Sync, connection to a 144 Hz panel, and low input lag ensure that even the most demanding titles run smoothly and responsively. As a result, we have a screen that will work well not only with a console but also as a solid “window” to the world of PC entertainment.

The commonly known drawback of VA panels that do not have an angle coating is their poor viewing angles. This is no different this time. Even with a slight deviation from the axis, the image becomes washed out, and the colours undergo significant degradation.

In the case of Hisense E7NQ PRO, the viewing angles are definitely a strong point, thanks to the IPS panel. This means that when we look at the screen even from a significant angle, the colours and brightness do not "wash out" as much as they do in televisions with a VA panel. Of course, compared to OLED or QD-OLED screens, where the image remains practically unchanged from every angle, IPS still falls short. Nevertheless, among LCD televisions, it is hard to find a solution that guarantees viewing angles as good as those offered by IPS. Unfortunately, everything comes at a cost – in this case, one has to come to terms with average blacks and lower contrast.

As far as the brightness of the television itself in SDR material is good (let's face it, we watch films in the evening or in the dark), the suppression of reflections is at a rather average level. This is due to the satin finish of the panel, which is quite susceptible to all light sources and neither absorbs nor disperses them. However, it is worth noting that thanks to the fairly high brightness in SDR material, the television performs fairly well in bright rooms overall, and certainly better than a large number of OLED televisions.

On a bright day, E7NQ PRO performs quite well. The "satin" display diffuses light effectively, preventing reflections and glares from turning into distracting "spots" on the screen. With an average brightness of around 500 cd/m², you can comfortably watch television in a sunlit room without much struggle to see details or clear content. It's perhaps not at the level of the highest premium models, but in everyday use, it still performs quite decently.

Before we move on to the software that controls the television, it is impossible not to mention the biggest distinguishing feature of the manufacturer's televisions. This is, of course, the multicoloured Ambilight backlighting, which is placed on the back of the device and displays colours tailored to what is happening on the screen, often allowing for an even greater sense of immersion. The operating system responsible for the television's functionality is Philips' proprietary system charmingly named TitanOs. It is definitely more closed and limited in terms of app resources compared to other televisions from the manufacturer that use the GoogleTV system. In addition to a lack of significant applications, its closed nature is also evident in another respect. We will not be able to perform such basic tasks as programming recordings or recording to USB. Those using Apple devices may also feel disappointed by the lack of AirPlay functionality, which allows for easy screen streaming. Fortunately, there is the option to connect a keyboard and mouse for easier navigation through the television menu. It's also worth mentioning that while the remote pairs via BT, it only works for voice selection in English. The rest operates via IR...

In summary: TitanOs has quite a few "buts," especially if we are aware users needing and using many streaming platforms. It is rather an option for those limiting themselves to the so-called holy trinity, which is Netflix, YouTube, and CDA.

Hisense E7NQ PRO operates on the VIDAA system, which has recently made significant progress. Most popular applications can be found here, although unfortunately, some music platforms like Spotify or Tidal are missing. Nevertheless, navigating the menu is quite enjoyable, and the responsiveness is at a satisfactory level. Yes, there are occasionally minor "stutters," but this is not something that will overwhelm our daily usage experience.

On the plus side, we can appreciate the support for voice search in Polish, which makes it easier to find favourite content without the tedious process of typing letters one by one. The television also offers plenty of additional options: we can record programmes, use AirPlay and mirroring, as well as enjoy extensive wireless connectivity options (Wi-Fi and Bluetooth). Perhaps it lacks a backlit remote or Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode, but these are rather niche features, so few will truly feel their absence. In everyday use, we simply have a solid foundation of useful tools and convenient solutions.

The default media player built into Philips PML9009 offers quite a wide range of capabilities, but it also has its limitations. It plays practically all video formats, except for .asf, which is rather uncommon. However, the issues are the lack of the H.265 HEVC codec at high bitrate and support for .sub files, which are quite popular. When it comes to photos, the player performs adequately, but it lacks support for some common resolutions and formats, such as HEIC, which is used on Apple devices. The player performs best with audio, where it can be faulted in no way. Unfortunately, due to system limitations, there is no possibility to expand its functions, which means we are left with what the manufacturer has prepared.

If we are counting on comfortable viewing of films with subtitles directly from a pendrive, we may unfortunately be disappointed. Just like with the previously tested A7NQ, we encounter a rather peculiar situation here: the television does not display subtitles, even if we correctly place them on the device and try various formats. Paradoxically, we find options to change the colour and appearance of the font, but as they say – what's the point if we still won't see anything?

In the case of other files, such as photos or music, the E7NQ PRO manages without major problems, playing the most popular formats without a hitch. Unfortunately, for those who would like to use the television as a multimedia player, the lack of functioning subtitles is quite a nuisance.

To begin with, it is worth noting that sound quality is a subjective matter. The built-in audio system in Philips PML9009 stands out for its clear treble, but the bass is rather flat and significantly worse than in competing models in the same price range.

When it comes to the built-in speakers, Hisense E7NQ PRO pleasantly surprised us. Of course, it is not on the level of a proper soundbar or home cinema system, but in everyday conditions, it performs quite well. During our tests, the dialogues remained clear, and the sound was sufficiently clean and spacious, so there was no immediate need to invest in additional audio equipment.

It also deserves credit for supporting multiple audio formats – from Dolby Atmos to the less common DTS:X. As a result, if we come across the right source materials, we can expect a more immersive, spatial experience. Although in terms of sound, it is still primarily at the level of a decent basic setup, Hisense E7NQ PRO should satisfy most users who simply want to turn on the television and hear clear, unblemished sound.
