LG is making a stronger move into the wireless audio segment, and it is doing so in collaboration with Dolby. The new Dolby Atmos FlexConnect system is intended to be more than just another soundbar; it is an attempt to completely change the approach to sound in the living room. Instead of one device under the television, the user receives a set of speakers that can be positioned practically anywhere, and the system will automatically adjust the sound to the space.
Wireless sound without restrictions on settings
The greatest advantage of FlexConnect is its flexibility. The speakers can be positioned in various configurations at the front, at the back, with or without a subwoofer, and the system automatically calibrates the sound depending on their placement. Interestingly, the television can serve as the central channel, further simplifying the entire setup. The technology is being integrated directly into new LG OLED televisions from 2025 and 2026, which means a soundbar won't always be necessary as a "command centre". The system supports up to four speakers and a subwoofer, and its greatest strength is the ability to maintain spatial effects even with unconventional equipment placement. This is a huge change for those who do not have ideal conditions for a classic home cinema.
Great potential but also limitations
Although the first impressions are positive, the system is not without flaws. The biggest issue is its closed nature; LG speakers do not work with TVs from other brands. This means that the user is practically "locked" into one ecosystem, which can be a significant downside. There are also questions about latency in games and the full utilisation of Dolby Atmos technology in real time. In films, the problem is less noticeable, as the system can synchronise the picture and sound, but in games it can look different. Nevertheless, FlexConnect has enormous potential, especially as an alternative to systems like Sonos, which have dominated the wireless audio segment for years.
FlexConnect shows that the future of home audio can be wireless and much more flexible than today, but it all depends on whether LG opens its system to a wider market.
