Our verdict

Samsung QN70F is a pretty decent mid-range TV. Its strongest point is definitely the smoothness of the image – thanks to the 144 Hz panel, low input lag, and a host of extras for gamers, we have here the recipe for nearly an ideal gaming screen. It will work just as well for sports fans – the image is fast, clear, and it doesn't tear. When it comes to image quality – it's really not bad. The VA panel delivers good blacks, brightness is above average, and colours look great after calibration. Samsung markets the QN70F as Neo QLED, which means Mini LED, and in a way, you can look at it that way – but only partially. The backlighting is edge-lit, so it’s far from full-fledged Mini LEDs with local dimming. It's a shame because marketing has its way, and the user might feel a bit misled. There are also some minor drawbacks – no USB recording, no DTS support. But still, the QN70F leaves a really good impression. It might not be a “true” Mini LED, but for its price, it's a solid piece of television – especially for gamers and those who enjoy fast, dynamic content.

The U7Q PRO is a TV that makes it clear within minutes: "speed is what matters here". Hisense has surprised us with how much they’ve packed into a device that doesn’t cost a fortune. A refresh rate of 165 Hz in 4K, and even 288 Hz in Full HD – not long ago, such figures were reserved exclusively for top-end gaming monitors. And here we have a mid-range TV with almost a full suite of features for gamers, confidently throwing down the gauntlet to much pricier competitors. But it doesn’t stop at speed. The U7Q PRO also boasts a very bright screen, peaking at an impressive 1500 nits. Like every Mini-LED, it has its typical "moods", occasionally exaggerating the image, but the overall visual effect remains very positive – especially in HDR content. It’s also worth mentioning the Vidaa operating system – fast, intuitive and equipped with features like AirPlay, a voice assistant, and a web browser. While it doesn’t offer the full range of apps found on Android, in everyday use the system performs exceptionally well. So, why is it “almost” perfect for gamers? It just lacks the HGiG feature, which allows for precise adjustment of brightness levels in HDR games. It’s a minor drawback, but it can be significant for console purists. Nevertheless, the U7Q PRO remains a very solid proposition – and a testament to the fact that Chinese manufacturers have not only caught up with competitors from Korea and Japan, but in some aspects have even begun to overtake them.

QN70F is equipped with a VA panel, which offers a high native contrast – a good starting point for black, especially for evening viewing. But theoretically, this is just the beginning of its capabilities. The television is branded as Neo QLED, which means it features Mini LED technology and a local dimming system. And indeed – the QN70F has such a function. The problem is that we’re not talking about classic local dimming with LEDs placed directly behind the panel. Instead, edge lighting with an overall dimming mechanism, known as global dimming, has been used. The effect of this is that instead of selective brightness control in individual zones, the entire screen is slightly dimmed when a dark scene appears. In practical terms, this means the contrast is average compared to Mini LED models that offer true local dimming. The black isn't bad – that’s thanks to the VA panel itself – but one can't speak of the precise light control that advanced systems with multiple zones provide. And here arises the question: is the QN70F series of televisions really a Mini LED television, or just a marketing variation on the Q70 series? Looking at the technical aspects – it’s hard to consider this model a full-fledged representative of this technology. But in everyday use, the black looks decent and for many people it can be fully satisfying.

Hisense U7Q PRO is a mini-LED television with a VA panel and – in the version we tested, 65 inches – 560 local dimming zones. It's worth noting straight away that this number varies depending on the size – larger diagonals get more zones, while smaller ones get fewer accordingly. But regardless, the dimming system itself works really solidly here.

The contrast is genuinely very good for the price range in which this model is placed. In optimal conditions, the U7Q PRO can achieve results close to six-figure values, which until recently was reserved for much higher-end equipment. In practice – in scenes like the one from the film Oblivion – the picture looks stunning. With the lights on in the room, it's hard at first glance to distinguish this TV from organic screens. Of course, it’s still an LCD with local dimming, so compromises are unavoidable. In more challenging scenes, where there are many small light sources, the U7Q PRO tends to dim too aggressively. Instead of a slight degradation of black – some details that should be visible disappear. This is a side effect of the algorithm, which firmly adheres to the principle of “black should be black,” even at the expense of subtle elements in the picture.

But nonetheless – contrast is one of the stronger points of this model.

QN70F is a television that can positively surprise when it comes to brightness. In ideal testing conditions, it reaches even 800 nits, which – for this price range – is a really solid value. Of course, that’s a result from test patterns, so we decided to check how it performs in practice, on real films. Here, the television somewhat tempers its capabilities. In most of the tested scenes – e.g. in "The Meg" – the actual HDR brightness remained around 500 nits. That’s still a decent result, allowing you to enjoy HDR effects, although it’s far from perfection. On the other hand, we have a QLED screen with a quantum dot layer, which means very good colour reproduction capabilities. Colours are vivid and saturated. QN70F covers about 94% of the DCI-P3 colour space, and in the wider BT.2020 palette, it exceeds 75%, so in this respect, there’s nothing to be ashamed of.

U7Q PRO is truly a bright television. In synthetic tests, it achieved over 1500 nits, which is an outstanding result for this price bracket. Such brightness – at least in theory – allows it to display HDR content as intended by the creators, even in more demanding scenes with strong lighting. In practice, it performs very well, but not always perfectly. In bright scenes with large areas – like the test screen with intense sunlight from the film "Pan" – the U7Q PRO makes a huge impression. It can even dazzle with its light, which is definitely an advantage in the context of HDR content. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always manage to maintain this when there are many small bright details on a dark background. In such moments, the local dimming algorithms tend to dim some bright elements to maintain good blacks – and the side effect is that some details simply vanish from the frame. This is a classic compromise in mini-LED televisions – and the U7Q PRO is no exception. With such a large number of dimming zones, however, one could have hoped for a slightly more mature algorithm responsible for their control. Fortunately, the overall perception of HDR content is very positive. The U7Q PRO is not only bright but also colourful, thanks to the PFS LED (QLED) coating, the coverage of the DCI-P3 colour palette is at 95%, and BT.2020 around 73%.

We tested the QN70F in the best default picture mode, which is Filmmaker Mode. And it must be admitted that in this particular test unit, the factory settings performed quite well. The picture was calm, natural, and despite slight deviations – pleasant to watch. The biggest error was a slight dominance of red in the white balance, which caused a slight pinkish tint over the entire scene. However, it wasn't a glaring flaw – rather subtle and only noticeable when directly compared to a properly calibrated screen. A slightly bigger issue arose in the brightness characteristics. The TV tends to lower the brightness of parts of the image that should be displayed brighter. As a result, some details can appear slightly dimmed – they don't completely disappear, but they don't stand out as clearly as they should. Nonetheless, as for a TV in this range and in these settings – we consider the result a good starting point for further calibration.

We tested the U7Q PRO in the best possible picture mode that this model offers – Filmmaker Mode. And indeed, this mode performs the best in terms of colour reproduction. But that doesn’t mean it’s perfect. In our test unit, both in SDR and HDR content, the image had a slightly cooler tone. The white balance was shifted towards blue, which made the overall image feel a bit "cooler." It may not be glaring, but it is definitely noticeable – particularly on white backgrounds, which instead of being neutral, seemed slightly bluish. Additionally – as we mentioned earlier – the television has a tendency to slightly brighten and oversaturate the image, which is also confirmed by the gamma and EOTF charts. All of this together means that without calibration, the image may appear somewhat unnatural – too cool, with slightly exaggerated dynamics. That’s why we decided to perform our own calibration – and you can see its effects and charts below.

After calibration, the QN70F shows that it can offer a really high level of colour reproduction. It has managed to nearly perfectly balance the white point, and the values in the Color Checker test dropped below level 3 – that is, below the threshold at which the average eye can notice differences. The image looks natural, and the colours are faithfully reproduced, without excessive saturation or the coolness known from factory settings. It must be acknowledged that Samsung provides very extensive calibration options – not only for enthusiasts but also for professionals. The QN70F takes advantage of this potential and, after appropriate settings, can come close to significantly more expensive models in terms of colour accuracy. The only thing that could still be picked on is the brightness characteristic. There is still a tendency to brighten the smallest sections of the image – particularly those that should remain darker. However, this is a design feature of this model, not a calibration error. Despite this, the final result definitely deserves recognition.

Thanks to calibration, we've managed to tame the white balance in SDR and HDR content. For SDR material, the effect is really quite good – the image becomes neutral, cohesive, and simply pleasant to watch. Everything looks the way it should.

HDR performs a bit worse. Although the white balance looks correct and overall the image gains naturalness, unfortunately, the delta E errors are still noticeable. Why? Because Hisense's U7Q PRO model does not give us full control over how the television manages brightness in HDR mode. And this is where the limitation arises. When we look at the EOTF curve for HDR content, it clearly shows what we mentioned earlier – at the beginning of the graph, there’s a noticeable drop, meaning the television darkens the smallest portions more than it should. On the other hand, those brightest elements can be overly bright. As a result, some details are lost, others are too aggressive, and overall control over brightness doesn't always align with what we’re trying to achieve during calibration.

Does the image look better after calibration? Definitely, yes, in terms of colour. But when it comes to brightness management in HDR, one must accept that the Hisense U7Q PRO will still do it in its own way.

Smoothness of tonal transitions

In terms of the smoothness of tonal transitions, the QN70F performs really well. Gradients are smooth, and colours blend into each other without distinct thresholds or banding. Even in more challenging movie scenes – particularly those that are very dark – any potential imperfections are minimal, and you really have to pay attention to notice them. In everyday viewing, most users should not encounter any issues with colour blending. The picture looks clean and cohesive, without artificial smoothing or distortions. This is another aspect in which the QN70F impresses positively.

The U7Q PRO handles tonal transitions really well. Colours blend smoothly, with no banding, stripes, or strange artefacts. Even in tougher scenes that typically expose any imperfections – there was nothing to criticise here. The picture simply looks clean. The gradients – both colour and grey – are fluid, nothing tears, nothing distracts. It's one of those elements you don't notice while watching… certainly not with the U7Q PRO.

Samsung QN70F offers a distortion reduction feature that improves the smoothness of tonal transitions. In "Standard" mode, it works quite well – smoothing out problematic transitions without significantly interfering with the structure of the image. Film grain is partially removed, but details like texture and skin structure remain visible. "High" mode operates much more aggressively. The smoothing is stronger, but at the cost of a noticeable loss of detail. Therefore, in practice, we recommend sticking with the "Standard" setting or turning off this feature altogether. The improvement in gradation may be less spectacular, but the image retains more naturalness.

When it comes to upscaling low-quality content, the QN70F performs very well. Tests with lower resolution images went really well. Despite some slight aliasing of contours, everything looks clean and clear, even if the original content was very poor quality. It's just a pity that the television has an overscan issue that cannot be completely turned off. As a result, images with very low resolution may be slightly cropped, which is mainly noticeable on subtitles or the interface.

If someone happens to come across older materials where the banding issue arises – Hisense has a solution for that. In the U7Q PRO, we find a feature called "Smooth and Gradient Picture". Set to the "Medium" level, it works really well – eliminating most gradient problems without smoothing the entire image like a blur in Photoshop. 😉 Film grain remains, details don't disappear – that's exactly how it should work. Well done on the implementation!

As for scaling weaker materials, it's simply good. It's not at the level of the most expensive TVs with advanced upscaling, but older content looks good. There is some minor banding at very low resolutions, but that's perfectly normal and hard to avoid. On the plus side – even with the oldest materials, there is no overscan effect, the image isn't cropped or artificially stretched.

The QN70F is a television with a refresh rate of 144 Hz, which in itself places it among the best when it comes to image smoothness. Whether we're watching fast-paced sports broadcasts or gaming on a console – the picture looks fantastic. There's no sense of stuttering, clipping, or the typical "judder" seen in lower-end models during fast motion. Samsung also allows you to adjust the smoothness to your own preferences. In the picture clarity settings, we find options such as motion blur reduction and judder reduction – each of which can be adjusted independently. This is especially useful when we are watching content with a lower frame rate and want to give it a smoother, more cinematic feel – or conversely, maintain the natural filmic "feel" of 24 frames.

“Speed” – this word was most frequently mentioned during our tests of the U7Q PRO. The television is equipped with a 165 Hz panel, which in itself is impressive – especially considering we’re talking about a mid-range model. Of course, PC gamers will benefit the most from its full capabilities, but even during everyday viewing, it’s clear that this is a fast and efficient panel. Like most modern televisions, the U7Q PRO can also enhance the smoothness of films that were originally recorded at 24 frames. In the menu, we find a slider that allows us to adjust the effect to our own preferences – from a more cinematic feel, with subtle motion, to a stronger smoothing with the characteristic “soap opera effect.”

Samsung QN70F is a really solid choice for gamers. It features four HDMI 2.1 ports with full bandwidth of 48 Gbps, which means full support for gaming in 4K at 144 Hz refresh rate. Plus, it has all the basic features we expect today: automatic game mode (ALLM), variable refresh rate (VRR), and a very well-designed, intuitive Game Bar that displays information about the mode, resolution, and frame rate.

The Game Motion Plus feature is also worth noting, as it allows for the addition of artificial frames to games running at 60 fps or less. It works surprisingly well and improves gameplay smoothness in many titles—especially in those where consoles struggle to maintain a stable frame rate—without significant latency.

Unfortunately, there are some drawbacks. The lack of support for Dolby Vision mode is not surprising—it’s a standard for Samsung. However, the absence of the HGiG feature is far more disappointing. Worse still, it was removed in a software update, which might catch users who previously relied on it off guard. Without HGiG, one cannot manually set the maximum HDR brightness from the console, resulting in some games looking slightly overexposed—especially if the TV misinterprets the tonal range. Why Samsung, a brand that has set the standards for gaming features for years, decided to take such a step is hard to say. At the time of writing this review, the tested TV was running on software version 1110—and frankly, if you care about full support for gamers, it’s better to hold off on updates for now.

Hisense U7Q PRO is a TV that seems to have been designed with gamers in mind. We have practically everything that can be expected from a gaming screen: variable refresh rate (VRR), automatic mode (ALLM), and as many as four HDMI 2.1b ports with full bandwidth of 48 Gb/s. Additionally, there’s a clear and quite functional Game Bar, as well as a well-implemented Dolby Vision GAMING mode that works seamlessly with Xbox Series S and X consoles.

Sounds like the ideal? Well, almost. Unfortunately, Hisense has still not implemented the HGiG feature, which is the system's tone mapping limitation on the TV's end. This means that when configuring HDR brightness on the console, we do it “by eye” or look for settings in online guides, as the screen does not display its actual brightness range. It’s a shame – because HGiG makes it easier to match the console to the TV and helps avoid overexposed or too dark scenes in HDR games.

Fortunately, the other elements work very well. Input lag is low, responsiveness is excellent, and the handling of other features is faultless. And although not everything worked perfectly, the U7Q PRO can still be confidently recommended to gamers.

The QN70F doesn't disappoint in terms of response time either. For 120 Hz content, the input lag hovers around 8 ms, which can be considered a very good result – especially in the context of online competition or dynamic action games. The screen responds to controller movements almost instantly, with no noticeable delay. This makes for smooth and comfortable gameplay, even in more demanding titles. In this category, Samsung continues to maintain a high standard, and it's hard to find anything that could raise concerns.

In terms of signal delay, the Hisense U7Q PRO performs exceptionally well. For 120 Hz content, the input lag stays below 10 ms, which translates to a lightning-fast response – the screen almost instantly reacts to our movements, something console and PC gamers will particularly appreciate. With 60 Hz content, the situation looks a bit worse, as the response time doubles – this is natural and applies to virtually all televisions. Nevertheless, it still remains below 20 ms, which can be confidently regarded as a very good result, almost close to perfection – and in practice, it’s hard to feel this during gaming.

Let's start with the best part when it comes to connecting the QN70F to a computer – that is, gaming. With a refresh rate of 144 Hz, support for G-Sync compatible VRR, and very low input lag, it’s the recipe for almost the perfect screen for PC gamers. In this role, the QN70F really doesn't disappoint – games look smooth, responsiveness is at a very high level, and everything runs steadily.

However, the situation is a bit worse when it comes to working with text. At 4K resolution and a refresh rate of 144 Hz, there is a noticeable slight blurriness in the edges of fonts – text may appear slightly smeared, with a minor “layering” of outlines. This is not a problem that disqualifies the QN70F's usability as a monitor, but those planning to do office work or text editing on this screen should bear this in mind.

Playing on a PC with the Hisense U7Q PRO is pure fun. Low input lag, a full 165 Hz in 4K and even 288 Hz in Full HD – these are numbers we wouldn't expect from a TV at this price. In this regard, it's really hard to nitpick. If someone is looking for a large screen for gaming from a PC – the U7Q PRO can confidently serve as a monitor. It performs a bit worse for everyday text work. Although chroma 4:4:4 is present, so theoretically, everything should look good. But in practice, grey text on a dark background looks strange – vertical lines are sharp, but horizontal ones can blur, disappear, or look slightly dimmed. However, it's fair to add that if you use the TV as usual – that is, from a few metres away – you're unlikely to notice this. The issue only becomes apparent when someone places the U7Q PRO on a desk, a metre from their face, and starts working with text or spreadsheets. If you plan to use it in this way – it’s worth keeping this in mind.

For a VA panel, the viewing angles on the QN70F are typical – meaning rather average. The image quickly loses contrast and saturation when we start looking at the screen from a greater angle. Compared to IPS panels, it performs significantly worse. On the other hand – thanks to this panel, we gain better black levels and higher contrast when viewing straight on, which for many users will be more important than wide visibility from the sides.

In this regard, the U7Q PRO performs averagely. The television is equipped with a VA panel, which is not known for its wide viewing angles. When you start looking at the screen at an angle, the image clearly loses brightness and the colours start to fade. This is a completely normal phenomenon in VA panels without additional coatings to widen the angles – so if you plan to watch from the side or with a larger group, it's worth keeping this in mind. On the other hand, head-on – the image looks great, with deep blacks and very good contrast, much better than on IPS/ADS panels.

The QN70F handles a bright lounge without any issues. The screen has a satin finish that effectively reduces reflections, so you don't have to immediately draw the blinds to see anything. Even when there's quite a bit of light in the room – for example, with a window on the side – the image still looks sharp and vibrant. The brightness is also at a solid level. In SDR mode, the television averages around 500 nits, which is more than adequate for daytime viewing. It may not be the level of top-end models, but in practice – for everyday watching of TV, sports, or YouTube – it performs very well.

As we mentioned earlier – the U7Q PRO is a really bright TV, especially when it comes to HDR content. For SDR materials, the TV dims a bit, but an average brightness level of around 500 nits is still a very solid result. This means you can easily watch TV or movies even in quite a bright room. Only under very extreme lighting – like direct strong sunlight on the screen – can visibility suffer a bit. Fortunately, Hisense has applied a satin anti-reflective coating that effectively reduces reflections, and the blacks maintain their depth even during the day. This makes a difference and allows for comfortable use of the TV in various lighting conditions.

Television Features

QN70F does not forget about the classic features that still matter to many users. Onboard, we find, among other things, a picture-in-picture (PiP) mode, thanks to the presence of two tuners, teletext, and a "Sound Only" mode – perfect if we want to use the television like a radio. We can easily pair headphones or a soundbar via Bluetooth, and the remote – despite lacking a numeric keypad – works reliably, allowing control of other devices and additionally does not require us to aim at the screen. It should be noted, however, that like all new Samsung models – we will not find the USB recording feature here. This is a systemic limitation, to which the brand apparently consistently adheres.

Smart TV QN70F – Tizen

The Tizen system, developed by Samsung for years, is one of the most refined Smart TV interfaces. It is fast, clear, and feature-rich. The QN70F supports voice search (also in Polish), wireless image streaming from a phone (both via AirPlay and Miracast), as well as integration with watches and other devices in the Samsung ecosystem. All of this is tied together by the SmartThings app, which allows you to control devices, automate tasks, and connect devices in one network. (Not just Samsung brand). However, it is not perfect. Tizen is a closed system, so the choice of apps can be somewhat limited – especially compared to Google TV. All the major streaming services are available, but if you are using less popular services, it's worth checking in advance whether they are available in the Samsung store.

Classic features of U7Q PRO

If you plan to use the television in a more "classic" way, that is, for watching daily programs or connecting headphones, the Hisense U7Q PRO has almost everything you could expect. The television easily supports recording to USB, you can connect headphones via Bluetooth, and the remote control is backlit, which is still not standard even in more expensive models. While many people today are foregoing these classic features in favour of streaming apps, it's good to know that the U7Q PRO still does this well and without compromises (aside from the lack of PiP functionality).

SmartTV System: Vidaa

When it comes to smart features, in Europe this model runs on the VIDAA system. The system operates smoothly, has a built-in web browser, supports voice control (also in Polish), and includes AirPlay, which will please users of Apple devices. However, it should be noted that VIDAA is a closed system, so you won't find all the popular apps that we've become accustomed to with Android TV or Google TV. Before purchasing, it's worth checking whether the apps you actually use are available.

Samsung QN70F handles multimedia playback well – it easily runs photos, music, and videos in the most commonly used formats. During testing, it opened JPG files, MP4s, and TXT subtitles without any trouble, so for most people, this will simply be sufficient. However, there were a few files – despite having the correct extensions – that refused to play. It may be an issue with a particular version of the system, and the problem might disappear after future updates.

The built-in media player in the VIDAA system worked very efficiently and seamlessly on our U7Q PRO unit. The television had no trouble reading external video and audio files, as well as subtitles, making it convenient to watch movies from a USB drive or external hard drive. Most popular formats worked flawlessly, so there was no need to convert anything. The only complaint is a certain selectiveness in handling high-resolution images – not all of them opened. The Samsung QN70F is quite average in terms of sound, which shouldn't come as a surprise considering the exceptionally slim design of the television. The built-in speakers will adequately handle daily watching of news or simpler content, but it's hard to talk about any depth or spaciousness of sound here. It's simply a compromise that must be accepted when choosing an elegant and thin design over a bulkier casing with a better audio system.

For built-in TV speakers, the U7Q PRO sounds surprisingly good. The audio is clear, with distinct mid and high tones, and while the bass is somewhat limited, it doesn’t completely disappear. One could say that for "TV speakers," the level is more than satisfactory. However, it’s worth noting that in our test unit, we couldn't play DTS:X audio from local files – the TV simply doesn’t support it. This means that if you’re counting on a cinematic surround effect solely from its built-in speakers, there might be a bit of a letdown. Thankfully, the TV seamlessly transmits DTS signals to an external amplifier, so if you have a home theatre – just connect it up and everything works as it should.
