OpenAI introduces a change that significantly improves the user experience with ChatGPT. The latest update means that ChatGPT Voice is no longer a separate mode, and voice conversation can now be conducted directly in the regular chat window.
What it means for users
Until now, voice conversations required switching to a separate screen with an animated blue sphere. There, users could talk to ChatGPT, listen to responses, and access several additional options, such as live video recording or quick mute. The problem was that:
– on that screen, you couldn't see the text transcription of the responses,
– if you missed something, you had to exit voice mode,
– switching between voice and text was not very smooth.
After the update, everything takes place in one window. You can speak and simultaneously see the responses appearing on the screen in real-time, as well as review the previous conversation flow and view shared visualisations – from maps to photos.
More Natural Conversation
In practice, this means a more intuitive use of ChatGPT. Voice and text are no longer separate worlds – you can now seamlessly switch between them within a single conversation. When you want to end a voice conversation and return to typing, just tap “end”.
If someone prefers the previous, “separate” voice mode, they can still revert to it. Just go to Settings → Voice Mode and enable the Separate mode option.
The new interface is being rolled out for all users, both in mobile apps and in the web version. The change will appear automatically.
