Apple finally fixes the clutter in Photos. The new feature could change the way you use your iPhone.

A smartphone photo library can very quickly get out of hand. Many people take several, or even a dozen or so, shots of the same scene, and later it's hard to decide which photos are really worth keeping. Professional photo-editing programs have long offered a star rating system that helps organise your images. Apple has apparently decided to finally bring a similar solution to its Photos app. The new feature appeared in the beta of iOS 27 and could turn out to be one of the most useful changes for people who regularly take photos with their smartphone.

Star ratings will make it quicker to sort photos

The new feature lets you assign photos a rating of one to five stars. That allows users to mark their best shots without having to create extra albums or move files manually. The solution is especially useful for people who take large numbers of photos while travelling, at family events or during photo shoots. After turning on the option in the Photos app, a new menu appears on each photo to let you quickly give it a rating. Apple also lets you rate multiple photos at once, which significantly speeds up the whole sorting process. That way you can review a series of similar shots and instantly pick the best ones. The feature is similar to tools found in programs like Adobe Lightroom, which have long been a standard among photographers. For many people this will be the first chance to manage photos conveniently without needing extra software. Importantly, all ratings are saved directly in the system library and work with iCloud. That means rated photos will remain available on all devices linked to the same Apple account. The novelty should be particularly welcome to users who have been keeping thousands of photos on their phone for years and struggle to quickly find the best frames. In practice, even a small change like this can noticeably improve everyday use of the Photos app.

Apple also adds the ability to filter the best photos

Simply rating photos would be of little use without proper search tools. That’s why Apple has also introduced a new filtering system based on the number of stars assigned. Users will be able to instantly display only photos marked with a particular rating. In practice this means you can create your own gallery of top shots without having to manually sort your entire library. If someone marks their favourite photos with five stars, one click is enough to show only those items. The solution could prove especially useful when publishing photos on social media or preparing images for further editing. For years many users have used different ways to tag photos, but none was as simple and intuitive. Apple has clearly opted for a solution tried by professionals and adapted it to the needs of the average iPhone user. Although the new feature may seem minor compared with other iOS 27 functions, it could have a big impact on everyday smartphone use. It will be particularly appreciated by people with huge photo libraries synced via iCloud. At the moment the feature is available in the developer version of the system, so it’s not yet known whether it will appear in the final release unchanged. Everything suggests, however, that Apple wants to further streamline photo management in its ecosystem.
