With support for HDMI 2.1, a refresh rate of 120Hz, and low input lag, it is an ideal choice for gaming enthusiasts. Features like the Game Bar provide quick access to game settings, enhancing user comfort and allowing for a fully immersive gaming experience.

For everyday use, the Q80D excels as well. Running on the Tizen operating system, it offers a wide array of apps and Smart TV features, including popular streaming services like Netflix, YouTube, and Amazon Prime Video. Its high brightness makes it suitable for bright rooms, effectively minimizing reflections and ensuring a clear picture even in challenging lighting conditions. The solar remote control is a notable advantage, eliminating the need for batteries and enabling control of other devices, such as decoders, thereby increasing user convenience and reducing the clutter of multiple remotes.

While the TV lacks recording functionality, it compensates with excellent picture quality. Although it does not support Dolby Vision, it delivers exceptional visual experiences after collaboration. The contrast, black levels, and vivid colours position it among the best televisions in its class. The incorporation of quantum dot technology (QLED) provides a wide colour gamut, and the local dimming feature enhances picture quality in dark scenes, which is especially important for watching movies and series.

The Samsung Q80D is an excellent choice for gamers and everyday users. It offers high-quality picture and sound, with a comprehensive range of Smart TV features. Despite a few minor drawbacks, it is a television that will undoubtedly meet the expectations of even the most demanding users.

The Hisense S7NQ Canvas TV is a very interesting proposition, especially for those looking for something in the style of a picture-TV but do not want to spend a fortune. At first glance, it stands out primarily because the gallery mode featuring works of art is completely free – there is no subscription fee, unlike Samsung's The Frame. Moreover, in the box, we immediately get a light brown frame, which will be an additional bonus and savings for many. Although it is designed to display art, it surprisingly performs quite well in other applications as well. The 144 Hz panel, full HDMI 2.1, support for VRR and ALLM – all of this makes gaming on consoles very much possible and quite enjoyable. The Vidaa system operates smoothly, and we find all the essential apps and features here, such as AirPlay, USB recording, and screen mirroring from the phone. But there are also aspects that are a bit lacking. First and foremost – the actual images. Compared to The Frame from Samsung, here they simply look more digital. There is a lack of depth, paint texture, and subtle details that really impress with the competitor. Although at first glance we are dealing with a similar matte panel, in practice it performs significantly worse at suppressing reflections. Colors and blacks fade much faster, especially in a bright room. This might also be due to lower brightness – Hisense is simply darker than its Korean rival. In addition, there are minor glitches in the software – for example, the lack of displaying external subtitles despite the option to configure them, or the not entirely effective image smoothing function with lower quality materials. In short: the S7NQ is a good TV in the form of a "picture," which can be a great alternative for those who do not mind the lower quality of the displayed works but appreciate the absence of subscription fees, the additional frame included, and the full functionality of a typical television. It is not a perfect product, but a reasonable compromise for Samsung The Frame.

Halo effect and black detail visibility:

The Samsung Q80D TV features a VA panel, which notably enhances contrast and black reproduction compared to IPS panels. VA panels excel in providing deeper blacks and better contrast, while IPS panels are known for superior viewing angles but compromise on contrast levels. In the case of the 55" model, the TV is equipped with 100 local dimming zones, although this number can vary with different screen sizes.

Local dimming contributes to impressive black levels, but it’s important to recognise that the algorithm controlling this technology, along with the limited number of zones can sometimes produce less-than-ideal results. Bright objects may be unintentionally dimmed to achieve deeper blacks. For instance, during tests of a scene from the film Oblivion, the lights merged into a single spot regardless of the dimming settings, highlighting the technology's limitations. Similarly, in The Revenant, large dimming zones became evident, such as the "Pause" logo in the upper left corner, showcasing the significant areas controlled by individual dimming zones.

Despite these drawbacks, local dimming technology still offers a marked improvement in picture quality over TVs lacking this feature or relying solely on edge-lit backlighting. The ability to completely turn off specific zones allows the TV to enhance brightness in selected areas, delivering a cinematic effect that is particularly effective in darker viewing environments.

The Hisense S7NQ CanvasTV is a television equipped with a VA panel, which by itself provides decent contrast. Our test patterns confirm this – the average score is around 4000:1. While this may not be an exceptional value, for this class of device, it's quite acceptable. The result might have been significantly better if the television had been equipped with local dimming technology; unfortunately, this model lacks it. As a result, blacks in a completely dark room resemble shades of navy or gray more than pitch black. This situation leads to a slightly visible clouding effect. Overall, it's fine, but without much excitement.

In the context of HDR, the Samsung Q80D television delivers impressive brightness performance in tested movie scenes, achieving levels between 600 to 900 nits when the frame is filled with light. This brightness enhances the vibrancy of the image and allows users to perceive the differences between HDR and SDR quality. However, challenges arise when small light effects appear against a dark background. For instance, in specific scenes, such as test slide 4 from Sicario 2, there is a noticeable drop in brightness due to the larger size of the dimming zones employed by the television. This limitation, coupled with the local dimming algorithm, affects the TV's ability to accurately display small bright elements on dark backgrounds, leading to a lack of brightness that can diminish the HDR effect, making it appear similar to SDR quality.

When it comes to the brightness of the television and how it handles bright elements while watching movies, it is just average—similar to contrast. The average brightness level of the Hisense S7NQ is around 500 nits. This is a value that allows you to feel the beginnings of true HDR, but it is definitely too little to speak of outstanding effects. However, the television deserves praise for color gamut coverage—movies look very colorful and vibrant. With the use of PFS LED (QLED) coating, the device can cover over 90% of the DCI-P3 color gamut and over 72% of the wider BT.2020 gamut. For a television in this class, these are truly very good results.

In "Filmmaker" mode, which is considered the best out-of-the-box choice, the Samsung Q80D demonstrates solid colour reproduction. However, when viewing SDR content, there is a visible drop at the beginning of the gamma curve, suggesting that details in dark scenes may be less clear, which could detract from the overall viewing experience. While the white balance in SDR content is generally accurate, significant drops in blue at screen coverage above 70% can lead to less natural hues in both bright and dark scenes. Users might notice that some blue elements appear less intense, resulting in a warmer tint to the colour presentation.

For HDR content, the EOTF (Electro-Optical Transfer Function) curve being above the reference line most of the time indicates that the TV may struggle to accurately reproduce brightness and detail in the brighter areas of the image, which can be less than ideal for viewers. Additionally, there is a notable drop at the beginning of this graph, signifying the TV's difficulty in reproducing brightness in dark areas; this limitation is apparent in contrast and black tests, where several scenes fail to showcase the TV's full brightness potential.

Regarding white balance, the initial performance on the chart is promising, however, a sharp drop in red, coupled with a significant rise in blue, may lead to inaccuracies in reproducing certain skin tones and other key colours. This issue can be particularly noticeable in scenes where colour details are essential, potentially affecting the viewer's overall experience.

Let's now check how the Hisense S7NQ CanvasTV performs in color reproduction in the best factory mode, which is Filmmaker. Right from the start, it is evident that it is definitely better than in dynamic or standard mode, but there are still a few things to nitpick. In terms of image quality from the HD signal, the colors are slightly inaccurate – there is a dominance of cooler shades of blue and a lack of red. Because of this, the image appears somewhat too cool.

A similar effect occurs with 4K content, but it is more noticeable there. The excessive exposure of blue tones and the lack of red make the image seem distinctly cold. However, the biggest issue with this television is not the colors themselves but rather the way brightness is managed. The tested unit slightly boosted the brightness compared to the reference value. The result is indeed better visibility of details, but at the cost of significantly brightened black – which makes the entire image seem more "flat."

A similar phenomenon was noticed in the 4K signal – the slightly inflated curve at the beginning of the EOTF graph shows that the television has a tendency to excessively expose certain scenes. Fortunately, this effect can be improved with professional calibration, which we will discuss in the next point.

Color reproduction after calibration

After calibration, the Samsung Q80D’s Movie mode offers a noticeable improvement over the out-of-the-box settings. Samsung provides an advanced suite of calibration tools, including 2- and 20-point grayscale adjustments as well as a CMS (Colour Management System), allowing for precise control over both SDR and HDR content. The calibration greatly enhances white balance, although minor errors remain in HDR content toward the end of the graph. Contrast has also improved, and the gamma curve for SDR content now aligns well with expected levels.

In HDR, the EOTF curve initially appears to sit ideally, however, closer examination reveals all lines are slightly above the reference line, a phenomenon that may be seen as the TV "enhancing" brightness for added appeal. This effect, however, comes at a cost: while the screen may appear brighter overall, it sacrifices detail in darker areas, leading to a loss of subtle textures in shadowed scenes. As a result, scenes with deep shadows or dark elements may lose some finer visual details that would enhance the viewing experience.

The results we achieved after calibrating the Hisense S7NQ are really very good. Thanks to the calibration, we were able to eliminate the excessive exposure of blue tones and the lack of red in the HD signal. A similar, although slightly weaker effect was also achieved with 4K HDR content. Brightness management in HD material has also improved – the television no longer has problems with overall image brightness issues.

However, there are things that cannot be overlooked. The characteristic of the EOTF curve has practically not changed, and the lack of local dimming means that the smallest elements on the screen will always be slightly overexposed. One simply has to accept this when choosing a television with a similar type of backlighting. Nonetheless, the final result is very good and should fully satisfy the vast majority of users.

Smoothness of tonal transitions

The Samsung Q80D excels in tonal gradation, marking it as one of the television's standout qualities. It handles even the most challenging scenes with finesse, maintaining smooth transitions and fine detail across varying shades. Any minor issues with colour transitions are almost unnoticeable, ensuring the average viewer enjoys a seamless, high-quality visual experience. This impressive gradation performance enhances everyday viewing, delivering a visually rich experience even during demanding scenes.

The smoothness of tonal transitions is one of those categories that even less advanced users can notice. If someone doesn't know what it's about – let us explain. It refers to whether colors blend smoothly or if their "sticking" is visible in the form of distinct bands. Good tonal transitions are those that are natural and smooth, without large jumps in color.

The Hisense S7NQ performs very well in this category, although it must be honestly admitted that it does a bit worse than Samsung The Frame. In very bright scenes, slight imperfections can be noticed, but you really need a keen eye to catch them. Overall – like in most "frame" style televisions – it still performs excellently.

Performing admirably with low-quality content, the Q80D’s noise reduction feature uses gentle gradation to smooth out unwanted image disturbances. However, this technique can also soften certain details, like film grain, that some viewers might prefer to retain. For those who appreciate a more polished and smoother image, particularly with lower-resolution material, this becomes a significant advantage.

In terms of image scaling, the Q80D stands out, enhancing both quality and detail for lower-resolution media. Advanced processing technology reduces artefacts and maintains clarity, as seen in the clean edges and absence of fraying in elements like branches during test scenes. This capability makes it an excellent option for viewers seeking an enhanced and comfortable viewing experience, even with less-than-ideal content quality.

It is equally important how the television handles tonal transitions on a poorer signal – for example, in older movies, television, or on YouTube. Unfortunately, despite the presence of the "Smooth and Gradient Picture" feature, which was supposedly intended to improve this aspect, its performance is truly lacking. It is barely noticeable that it has any real impact on the visibility of color transitions.

Image scaling also performs poorly. Yes, one can observe that the television tries to "stretch" the quality, but the final effect is far from ideal. The image often appears slightly jagged, which is especially noticeable in the case of tree branches in the background. Additionally, the Hisense S7NQ has a clear tendency to crop the image at lower resolutions, which can cause us to miss captions in the news or finer details of the image.

Users have two customisation options to enhance smoothness: "Motion Blur Reduction," adjustable on a 10-step scale for refined control, and "Blur Reduction," which works particularly well at higher refresh rates, enhancing clarity in fast-moving scenes. In the UFO test, the panel performs without trailing or forward-cloning effects, indicating a lack of overshoot and delivering clear, sharp visuals during rapid motion.

When it comes to motion fluidity, the television performs really well. Although the S7NQ was mainly designed for displaying static elements – such as images – the manufacturer has utilized a panel with a refresh rate of 144 Hz. As a result, sports or games look really good on it.

For materials that are not recorded at a high frame rate, the manufacturer provided two features that allow you to adjust the picture to your own preferences. "Motion blur reduction" and "motion smoothing" operate on a 10-level scale, allowing you to choose between a more cinematic image – with characteristic frame jumps – and a smooth effect reminiscent of a "soap opera." How to set this up? That's a personal matter – we leave the decision to you.

The Samsung Q80D is a fantastic choice for gamers, offering a range of advanced gaming features that are rare in this price category. Equipped with four HDMI 2.1 ports, it enables key functionalities like ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), and 120Hz support at 4K resolution, ensuring smooth and responsive visuals, essential for fast-paced gaming. The TV also supports HGIG (HDR Gaming Interest Group) for optimal HDR display in games and includes a Game Bar for quick access to gaming settings. Gamers with Nvidia graphics cards will appreciate the G-Sync support that eliminates screen stuttering and tearing.

Although it lacks Dolby Vision support, which may disappoint those seeking that HDR format, Samsung has partnered with Microsoft since 2022 to provide the Xbox Game Pass app, enabling cloud gaming access to a wide library of games without a console.

Even though the S7NQ is an "image" type TV, you can actually play games on it. Really. It has almost everything (except for HGiG mode) that a modern gaming TV needs. The 144 Hz panel and two full-fledged HDMI 2.1 ports allow for seamless connection of two consoles, such as PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S.

The TV supports automatic game mode (ALLM) and frame synchronization (VRR) without any stuttering or issues. It also handles high frame rates at lower resolutions without a hitch. We must commend Hisense for the very attractive Game Bar – it displays all available picture options, and additionally, we have the ability to zoom in on the mini-map or enable a crosshair (because sometimes someone might actually want to "aim" 😉).

The only missing element – as we mentioned earlier – is the lack of a proper implementation of HGiG mode. It is responsible for automatically setting the picture in games as the creators intended. It's a shame because that’s the only thing separating the Hisense S7NQ from being a full-fledged gaming "monster."

There's not much to say, the input lag at such a level is simply outstanding. It's hard to achieve a better result that would satisfy the players! The TV performed excellently at every tested resolution and frequency, both in SDR and HDR.

Input lag on the Hisense S7NQ performs well, although it cannot be said to be outstanding – especially for the standards of 2024/25. Values around 30–20 ms may not be very high and the average player probably won’t notice it, but those who spend a lot of time gaming may feel a slight discomfort.

The situation looks definitely better when playing in Dolby Vision mode – then the delay is lower and gameplay feels more enjoyable. The problem is that there are still few games supporting this mode and they are primarily available on the Xbox console.

As a computer monitor, the Samsung Q80D performs admirably. With chroma 4:4:4 support in "Game" mode, text appears crisp and legible, ideal for users working on text documents or spreadsheets. The TV’s exceptionally low input lag in "PC" mode—just 9 ms—ensures smooth, responsive performance, which is a significant advantage for both gaming and video editing.

One minor drawback is related to font rendering on dark backgrounds. When examining fonts closely, horizontal lines may appear darker than vertical ones, suggesting that the sub-pixels aren't fully illuminated in these instances. This could indicate a gap in the TV's algorithm for rendering fine lines, slightly affecting text detail on darker backgrounds. Despite this, the Q80D remains a strong choice for PC use.

When it comes to working with a computer, the S7NQ Canvas TV performs really well. Gaming on it is seamless thanks to the presence of a 144 Hz panel and support for G-Sync with Nvidia cards. Input lag – as we mentioned earlier – is good, though not outstanding.

And how about working? It’s doable. The TV has a proper implementation of chroma 4:4:4, so fonts look quite sharp. One could nitpick about some minor issues with the thinnest letters on a dark background, but let's be honest – rarely does anyone sit a meter away from a 55-inch screen reading small text.

Equipped with a VA panel, the Samsung Q80D has limited performance for viewing angles. At a 45-degree angle, there is a noticeable drop in brightness, and the image loses some sharpness—potentially an issue if viewed from different spots around the room. However, the VA panel has distinct strengths when viewed head-on. Blacks are deep and well-saturated, creating a rich, immersive picture. Additionally, dark colours retain much of their depth even when viewed from an angle, a commendable feature for a VA panel.

The viewing angles are typical for a VA matrix. The S7NQ loses quite a bit when viewed at an angle of about 45 degrees – the colors fade, and the brightness drops significantly. It's a pity because, after all, this is a television that is intended to display works of art – it would be nice to be able to look at them from different places in the room, not just straight on.

However, while the satin coating of the panel helps, the TV's glare reduction capabilities are only average. In brightly lit conditions, unwanted reflections can occur, which may disrupt viewing comfort, especially when light sources directly hit the screen.

The Hisense S7NQ Canvas TV is equipped with a matte panel that effectively suppresses reflections – very similarly to its Chinese rival, the TCL A300 NXTVision. Unfortunately, both designs fall short in this category compared to Samsung's The Frame, which offers significantly better anti-reflective coating. In the case of the Chinese models, including the S7NQ, colors fade significantly under light, and black performance in such conditions is weak. Generally, if someone prefers matte displays, well... it looks like it looks – Samsung simply did it better.

With support for a wide array of applications, including popular streaming services, users can access diverse entertainment content without needing additional devices. Notably, the 2024 update includes support for the Polish language.

Additionally, the eco-friendly solar remote control offers convenience for everyday use, as it can also manage other devices such as home theatres, decoders (e.g., Canal+), and gaming consoles, which can be challenging for competing manufacturers. Gamers will appreciate several features tailored to enhance their experience. The television supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) technology, providing smoother game displays and reducing tearing and stuttering. With low input lag, responses in games are quick and precise.

The Game Bar function allows for easy access to key gaming settings without leaving the game, enabling adjustments to parameters such as VRR, input lag, frames per second (FPS), screen ratios, and sound settings, allowing gamers to optimize their experiences in real time. Additionally, the television supports AirPlay for effortless content streaming from Apple devices and connects to various Bluetooth devices, such as mice and headphones, increasing versatility.

However, it is important to note the lack of USB recording support and the absence of DTS audio format compatibility. This limitation means that content encoded in DTS may not be correctly reproduced, which could pose issues for those using Blu-ray discs or multimedia files that rely on this format for high-quality surround sound. To fully enjoy the audio experience, users might need to consider an external player or soundbar that supports DTS.

Since the Hisense S7NQ is a special-purpose television, we will start the description a bit differently – with the most important aspect of such models, which is displaying works of art. Like all "art" televisions, it features a special mount that allows the screen to be installed completely flat. The biggest advantage over the Korean Samsung The Frame is the fact that, despite the smaller availability of images in gallery mode, all of them are completely free – there is no subscription fee required. An additional bonus included with the S7NQ is the light brown frame. This is a significant plus, especially if someone was already planning to choose this particular color – it can save some money both on the frame and the subscription.

However, when it comes to the quality of the displayed images, it is unfortunately evident that the Samsung The Frame performs significantly better in this regard. The images in the S7NQ look more digital, while in The Frame, the Art Store mode offers true scans of works of art, where you can even see the texture of the paint or the artist's brush strokes. And again, we return to the old truth – for better quality, you simply have to pay.

Fortunately, the S7NQ is not just an "art", but also a normal television – and in this role, it performs really well. Like most Hisense models with the VIDAA system, we find many basic functions here, such as recording to USB, screen mirroring, and AirPlay support. The built-in player in the Samsung Q80D television is definitely one of its strengths. It handles almost all video and audio files used in our tests very well, with the only exceptions being the Dolby Vision format, which is unsurprising, and some less common codecs. However, the television performs somewhat worse with photo formats, as it only supports JPEG among popular formats, lacking compatibility with formats such as PNG or Apple HEIC.

The Hisense S7NQ easily plays the vast majority of popular audio, image, and video formats. So why the relatively low rating in this category? Well, it’s because of software issues. This is another Hisense TV that didn’t allow us to open external subtitles in films. Regardless of whether we’re talking about the .ass, .srt, .txt, or .sub format – the subtitles simply didn’t appear.

The funniest (or rather, the most frustrating) part of it all is that in the menu, we find options to change the font color, size, and background… The problem is that the subtitles themselves are completely invisible.

Equipped with a 40W audio system in a 2.2 configuration, the Samsung Q80D TV delivers solid sound quality, supporting popular Dolby codecs to enhance the audio experience for films and games. However, it’s worth noting that the TV lacks DTS support. This limitation can be addressed by connecting an external audio system, which can improve sound depth and immersion. Samsung also offers a range of soundbars compatible with this model, alongside the Q-Symphony feature, which synchronises audio between the TV and a soundbar for a richer output. Testing on the QE65Q80D shows that while the sound quality is decent, it doesn’t stand out compared to competing models. To fully appreciate the TV’s excellent picture quality, investing in an additional audio system is recommended. The sound remains well-balanced even at high volumes, maintaining clarity without distortion—a definite plus.

When it comes to sound, it presents itself... like a television on the wall – that is, rather flat. Despite the use of a 2.0.2 speaker setup with a total power of 36 W, we cannot speak of any exceptional sound. But as is often the case – purchasing even the simplest soundbar can dramatically change the situation.

On the plus side, it must be noted that it supports practically all popular Dolby and DTS codecs. This way, we can easily connect the television to a home theater system without having to fiddle with settings or audio conversion.
