Ahead of us is CES 2025 in Las Vegas – the annual celebration of technology, where electronics giants will compete to showcase their latest achievements. The main focus? Of course, OLEDs. Everything indicates that next year we will see some truly interesting changes.
LG Display is reportedly experimenting with a new structure for OLED panels. Current rumors indicate a shift to a four-layer construction, which would allow for a brightness level of 3700 nits. This is a huge leap. Interestingly, the company may abandon the micro-lens array (MLA) technology, as it is simply too costly to produce. Meanwhile, the first leaks about the LG G5 models that have passed certification in Hong Kong suggest significantly lower energy consumption. Brighter and more economical?
Samsung Display also does not intend to back down. The company is working on an improved version of QD-OLED, and a key step is to remove the separate CF/QD layer and print quantum dots directly onto the protective layer. As a result, Samsung hopes to achieve brightness levels of up to 4000 nits. If these figures are confirmed, their panels will be a really strong competitor to LG.
But what does it mean for us, ordinary users? First of all, brighter screens that will cope in a sunlit living room, lower energy consumption, which each of us will appreciate with rising bills, and better colors that will impress both movie buffs and gamers. The competition between LG and Samsung is great news for us. The more they compete, the faster we get better products, sometimes at more reasonable prices.
One thing is for sure – CES 2025 promises to be really exciting, and OLEDs may pleasantly surprise us. We just have to wait for the first official announcements and… maybe start saving for a new TV?
